Discover Rønbjerg: Nature, Hiking Trails and Culture
Rønbjerg brings together forest, lake, heathland and remarkable cultural monuments within a compact thematic area. Rønbjerg Plantation is located in Flyndersø - Sønder Lem Vig Nature Park. Those who want to combine active days in the landscape with historical impressions will find different options for planning their days here. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to focus on hiking trails, nature experiences or the culture surrounding Rønbjerg Church.
Hiking Trails between the Plantation and Flyndersø
Hikers can choose between two routes described in different ways. The red hiking route “Rønbjerg - Flyndersø” leads from Rønbjerg via Stationsvejen and Præstevejen through the forest. It then follows footpaths along Flyndersø. The yellow hiking route “Rønbjerg - Flyndersø” leads through forest and hollow ways to the lake. On the return journey, it follows Flyndersø for approximately one and a half kilometres back to Rønbjerg. Those who want to compare different types of excursions can include the specific routes in their travel plans without choosing the same path every day.
There is also a public shelter site in Rønbjerg Plantation in Gl. Rønbjerg. It can be reached from Præstevejen by car, on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The site includes a shelter, picnic tables, a shelter with a fire pit, a resting pasture for horses, a hitching rail for horses and a dry toilet. This equipment makes the site a clearly defined destination within the plantation. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can assess its location based on which of the mentioned landscape experiences you would like to include during your stay.
Flyndersø, Heathland and Expansive Landscapes
Flyndersø, a large glacial lake between heathland and plantation, lies in the immediate vicinity of Rønbjerg. It can be reached on foot from Rønbjerg and Estvad in just a few minutes. On Rønbjerg Heath there is a well-preserved ring enclosure, which presumably served as a cattle or sheep pen. The highest point of Rønbjerg Heath offers views over Flyndersø and Hjelm Heath. This allows you to experience the lake, heathland and the history of the landscape on different excursions.
Flyndersø Mill is located near the lake. It bears witness to the former use of the forces of nature and adds a cultural-historical aspect to exploring the landscape. The activity area “Den Røde Ring” in Rønbjerg was inaugurated in 2015. Together with the hiking trails, this provides several specific themes for planning your trip: a day along the lake, a circuit through forest and hollow ways, or an excursion to the historic traces of the surrounding area.
Rønbjerg Church and Historical Discoveries
Rønbjerg Church stands west of Rønbjerg on an isolated moraine ridge surrounded on all sides by a sandur plain. The church contains late Gothic murals on the north wall of the nave, executed by the Ejsing workshop around 1500 to 1525. Particularly impressive is the almost ten-metre-long frieze of paintings from 1522. It depicts seven scenes from the Passion of Jesus: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Kiss of Judas, the presentation before Pilate, the flagellation, the crowning with thorns, the carrying of the cross and the crucifixion.
Rønbjerg is therefore not only a starting point for paths through the plantation, heathland and lake landscape, but also a destination for travellers interested in medieval art and regional history. Accommodation in Rønbjerg is particularly suited to your plans if you want to combine nature and cultural experiences and choose your excursions according to the day’s particular interests.
