Samsø combines protected coastal landscapes with traces of a long cultural history and a variety of routes across the island. The protected Stavns Fjord contains islands covered with grass and shrubs; at the same time, the area is home to a diverse range of animal and plant life. Historic sites, museums, harbours and landscapes come together to create a varied picture of Samsø.

Nature and Coast

Most of the 480-hectare Nordby Bakker area is protected. Its landscape includes grassland, ravines, hills, shrubs, small woods and wetlands. Samsø’s beaches also take different forms, ranging from child-friendly, gently sloping shores to stony stretches with good fishing opportunities.

Cycling and Island Routes

The regional cycle route “Kulturringen” has two stages on Samsø. The first Samsø stage is 42 kilometres long in total and runs from Sælvig via the north of the island to Ballen. This means that both the north and the connection between Sælvig and Ballen are included in its route.

Culture and History

The Kanhave Canal is approximately 500 metres long, 11 metres wide and about 1.25 metres deep. It connected Stavns Fjord with the sea west of Samsø. At Vesborg Fyr, the lighthouse stands on the site of a castle complex built by Valdemar Atterdag, which was among Denmark’s largest ring forts in the Middle Ages. Information boards around Vesborg Fyr explain the views from the tower parapet of the nearby surroundings and the horizon. The Krudthuset at Vesborg Fyr also houses an exhibition about the five medieval ring forts on Samsø.

The Samsø Museum conveys the cultural history of Samsø through exhibitions and activities. The Samsø Museumsgård displays authentic interiors and objects from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. In Nordby, a beautiful village pond and surrounding half-timbered houses shape the townscape; in 1990, the village was named Denmark’s best-preserved village.

Activities by the Water

The Samsø Nature School is located directly on Stavns Fjord, a few hundred metres from Langør Havn, and offers activities for all age groups. Its facilities include six aluminium dinghies that can be used as rowing boats. Water-observation equipment allows visitors to explore the plant and animal life in the fjord. Langør Havn is a natural harbour in the protected Stavns Fjord and has been used since the Viking Age.

Another special attraction is Samsø Labyrinten. It is considered the world’s largest labyrinth, covers 60,000 square metres and has a network of paths measuring 5.5 kilometres.

Hiking

The 91-kilometre Ø-CAMINO SAMSØ is divided into eight stages. The start and finish are in Sælvig, but the route can also be started and finished in other places. The Ø-CAMINO SAMSØ is not a signposted hiking route.

Several different routes are available for shorter hikes. The hike around Møgelskår is approximately 2 kilometres long. It follows a valley path to the sea and then returns over the hills in a small loop. The route around Issehoved is approximately 5 kilometres long and runs over coastal slopes as well as along narrow paths through shrubs and past small farms before returning to the car park. The hike at Asmindør Hage is approximately 3.3 kilometres long, takes about an hour and begins with a stretch along a stony beach.

Local Produce

The annual Samsø Råvarefestival celebrates local produce and food culture and takes place in mid-June. Visitors can meet Samsø producers and chefs there and take part in tastings, workshops, talks and mini-courses. At Samsø Bryghus, dishes made with the farm’s own vegetables and meat are served alongside its own beer and homemade berry juice.

Getting There

SAMSØLINJEN connects Ballen on Samsø with Kalundborg on Zealand; the crossing takes 80 minutes.
