Fjord Landscape and Birdlife around Stadil

Nearby Vest Stadil Fjord is an open meadowland area with large lakes. It is also a wildlife reserve and a Natura 2000 site. The Stadil Fjord and Vest Stadil Fjord Natura 2000 site is considered an important resting and feeding area for migratory and breeding birds. Stadil Fjord itself also offers a remarkable landscape feature: it is a lagoon and is one of the most species-rich bodies of water in Denmark. The elongated island of Hindø naturally divides the lagoon into two basins.

There are specific spots for birdwatching. At Stadiløvej, east of Søndre Dyb, golden plovers can be observed in May; in autumn, lapwings, geese, shore larks and birds of prey may be seen there. The birdwatching hide at Vest Stadil Fjord offers views of the fjord’s birdlife and can be reached by following the sign “udkigstårnet 500 m”. The site has information boards, an accessible toilet, tables and a barbecue area.

Hiking and Cycling by the Water

Along the eastern edge of Vest Stadil Fjord, a path for horse riders, cyclists and hikers runs along the old dyke crest. The combined route begins at the northernmost car park on Stadiløvej and ends at the car park on Vesterhavsvej. The Vestkyststien runs along the eastern side of the fjord from north to south and forms part of the North Sea Cycle Route, which passes through eight countries around the North Sea.

Those planning a shorter hike can choose the 5.8-kilometre Hindø Route along Stadil Fjord. It passes through dry grassland, meadows and reed beds. Bitterns and marsh harriers breed in the reeds along the route, while swans, coots and ducks rest on the fjord. For longer cycling tours, the signposted Fuglenes Fjord panoramic route, no. 408, is an interesting option; it is 27.4 kilometres long and leads to Vest Stadil Fjord.

Travelling by public transport to the southern part of Vest Stadil Fjord involves taking a train to Ringkøbing, bus route 580 to Kloster and then walking 6.4 kilometres to Stadiløvej. When planning your trip, therefore, consider which excursions you would like to take and how the location of your accommodation fits with the intended starting points.

Stadil Church and Historical Traces

Stadil Church is a medieval church dating from the Valdemar period. Its Romanesque chancel and nave are complemented by Late Gothic additions, including a west tower and a northern porch. The churchyard retains brick-built portals that may date from the Late Middle Ages. Particularly remarkable is the golden altarpiece: it consists of 14 decorated panels depicting Jesus Christ, scenes from his childhood, apostles, the symbols of the Evangelists and angels. The altarpiece dates from approximately the 12th century. Those interested in culture can easily combine this historical focus with a trip otherwise devoted to the landscape and birdlife.

Further memorial sites add to the picture of the area. Flyvergraven ved Stadil commemorates the crash of the Avro Lancaster III EE138 at Fuglbjerg, west of Stadil. A memorial stone was erected there in 1950, and there is also a memorial plaque. In 2013, a propeller blade from the aircraft was placed at Flyvergraven ved Stadil. Other features that help orient visitors in the region include Strandgaarden, a protected four-winged dune farm dating from 1875, and Husby Klit, a 14-kilometre-long dune spit between Nissum Fjord to the north and Vest Stadil Fjord to the south.
