Discover Spjald: Nature, Leisure and History

Spjald combines a varied landscape with a remarkable cultural history. Experience nature and stay active

The municipal Spjald–Muldbjerg route runs north of Spjald. The hike is five kilometres long and leads through moorland, hedgerows and fields. For planning your day, it offers a clearly defined nature excursion with changing landscape impressions. A nature trail was also established on Spjald’s former railway line in 2012. The railway is part of the town’s history: from 1911 to 1961, Spjald was a railway town on the Ringkøbing–Nr. Omme Railway.

If you enjoy combining different activities on holiday, Spjald Fritid offers swimming for all ability levels. There are groups for the whole family, and registration is possible directly. Tennis is also available: the courts can be booked, rackets are available to borrow, and beginners can therefore get started straight away.

Brejninggaard and the history of the surrounding area

A particular historical focus is Brejninggaard. The water-management complex with dams, canals and mill sites is almost 450 years old and exceptionally well preserved. Today, only a cleared area remains at the site of the former Brejninggaard Watermill. At the same time, local history recalls the importance the mill once had: for centuries, the farmers of the parish were obliged to have their grain milled there.

Craftsmanship and everyday history can also be experienced here. Several looms from the parish were used in the tradition of „weaving on a spjald“ to weave ribbons and garters. A preserved quarter-mile stone also stands by the pétanque house at Spjald School. In the immediate vicinity of Spjald lies Muldhøje, a group of four burial mounds. The two largest are connected into one long mound. Also in the immediate vicinity, the burial known as the Muldbjerg Man was created around 1400 BC and discovered in 1883 by archaeologists from the National Museum.

Museum, church and architectural details

The Brejning Local History Museum has permanent exhibitions on Spjald’s past. From 1 October to 1 May, it is open every Monday morning. It is therefore worth including this visit deliberately in your travel plans and taking the opening hours into account for your own date.

In the immediate vicinity of Spjald, Brejning Church essentially has a Romanesque nave and a Romanesque chancel. In the Late Gothic period, a tower was added to the west and a porch to the north. The east gable bears the year 1581 as well as coats of arms with the initials of Hans Lange and Johanne Skram. The coats of arms are made from the same terracotta panels as the façade decoration of Brejninggaard. The east wing of Brejninggård was built around 1580; the eastern gate wing features striking terracotta decoration with a pilaster-divided façade.
