Randers: Art, Nature and Unique City History

Randers combines unusual cultural experiences with river landscapes and paths through wetlands. The city is therefore suitable for a trip where you can give different weight to museum visits, nature observation and walks. Nature along the Gudenå and at Vorup Enge

One defining landscape area is Gudenåparken. The 28-hectare nature park lies on the northern bank of the Gudenå between the river and the railway grounds. The paths offer opportunities for close-up birdwatching. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will find an independent nature experience here, without having to tie their visit to a specific route or a fixed schedule.

Vorup Enge presents another side of the river landscape. The 119-hectare wetland comprises grazed meadows and open expanses of water connected to the Gudenå. Two birdwatching towers are freely accessible to everyone. Vorup Enge can be crossed on foot along paths; high water levels may make the paths more difficult to use at certain times of year. This condition should be taken into account when planning to include the area as a longer walk.

Art, crafts and distinctive city history

Randers Art Museum displays around 4,300 works in its permanent collection, dating from the beginning of the 19th century to the present day. A dedicated section focuses on the artist Sven Dalsgaard, who had roots in Randers. In addition, the approximately 6-kilometre Sven Dalsgaard Route places the local artist at the centre of a walk through Randers.

The GAIA Museum also adds a distinctive accent. Its permanent collection comprises more than 400 works by Danish and internationally recognised outsider artists. Museum Østjylland looks further back in time: Its permanent exhibitions cover life in the Randers area from the first human presence 100,000 years ago to the present day.

One of the most unconventional sights is Memphis Mansion. The museum is inspired by Elvis Presley’s Graceland and largely resembles its model in Memphis externally. It also houses one of the largest privately owned collections of Elvis memorabilia, including distinctive stage costumes.

Further routes through the city provide historical impressions. Sct. Mortens Kirke is the only one of Randers’ five medieval churches that is still preserved today. The Gothic merchants’ town church was built around 1494–1520 as a replacement for an earlier medieval church of the same name and has a carillon with 49 bells in the lantern of the tower. On Storegade, Niels Ebbesens Hus is Randers’ largest preserved half-timbered house, with three storeys. According to legend, Niels Ebbesen killed the count in this house in 1340.

Experiences for different kinds of travel days

Randers Regnskov offers a tropical visitor experience with free-roaming monkeys, iguanas, sloths, jaguars and many other exotic animals. Guided experiences provide special insights into life in the tropical rainforest. Randers Nature Centre provides boats for trips on the Gudenå, bringing visitors, including wheelchair users, close to nature and the birds.

For a relaxed focus, Water & Wellness Randers offers a 6,700-square-metre adventure pool as well as a spa and wellness area with massages, a steam bath, saunas and an outdoor sauna garden.

Important planning note

The Håndværksmuseet displays various crafts in its workshops, from glove-making and carpentry to photography. However, for the travel period, please note that it has been closed for two years since 1 April 2025. The exhibitions are being renovated and renewed; the museum is scheduled to reopen as HÅNDVÆRK in summer 2027. The building is located in a former warehouse belonging to the distilleries and is known for its impressive wooden structures.
