Discover Gjerlev: Moorland, Trails and History

Gjerlev combines a species-rich moorland landscape with tangible traces of the past. The focal point is Gjerlev Kær: the path through the area runs along the Øster Tørslev Å and offers a travel experience in which nature observation, exercise and history come together. Gjerlev Kær: Trails, Water and Rare Plants

The “Sporene i Gjerlev Kær” hiking trail is located in the eastern part of Gjerlev. The yellow trail through Gjerlev Kær leads past the ruins of Møgelholm. The estate burned down in 1955, was not rebuilt afterwards, and the land was divided into parcels. In addition, a robber castle is said to have stood at the site of Møgelholm in the 13th century. This means that a walk through the Kær becomes not only a nature experience, but also an encounter with different layers of history.

Gjerlev Kær is a nutrient-rich fen. In Denmark, nutrient-rich fens are among the most species-rich plant communities. The plants and rare species mentioned include Sumpkællingetand, butblomstret siv, glanskapslet siv, kær-trehage, maj-gøgeurt, tormentil, hjertegræs, engblomme and sedges. With a little luck, you may spot herds of deer as well as foxes, hares and mink during a walk. Those travelling with different interests can adapt the outing to their own pace: at one point, the trail itself may be the main focus, while at another, attention may turn to animals, plants or the traces of Møgelholm.

Practical Information for a Day Trip

There are three shelters at the shelter site in Gjerlev Kær. Inside, there is a fire pit, while a larger fire area is located outside. In summer, a toilet is freely accessible there; water is available from an outdoor tap at the toilet building. These specific facilities help you plan your stay in the Kær clearly, without having to limit the outing to a single activity.

Church, Local History and Cycling Route

Gjerlev Church also offers several points of historical interest. The tower and the weapons porch are said to have been built around 1400. In the chancel arch, there is a revealed, lime-painted coat of arms bearing the inscription “Nicolaus Jacobi 1605”. The pulpit is designed in the Rococo style and dates from 1762. Those interested in architectural history, church art or specific dates will find a distinctly different focus here than on the trails through the moorland.

The Gjerlev Activity House offers another perspective on the area: the Nørhald Local History Archive is also housed there and focuses on local history. For cyclists, the 60.8 km route “Fortidsminder mellem fjordene” lists Gjerlev J as one of its locations.
