Holiday homes in Odder Municipality: Coast, Tunø and cultural history

The Odder Municipality is characterised by its coast, island nature and cultural history. The landscape includes the Natura 2000 area along the coast from Gyllingnæs to Hou. It protects interconnected coastal meadows, coastal and marine habitats, as well as the breeding and migratory birds found there.

Nature and coast

Norsminde Fjord lies on the northern boundary of Odder Municipality. It has been a wildlife reserve since 1942 and is now an EU Special Protection Area for birds. Another extensive shallow-water area begins at Hov and extends into Horsens Fjord as far as the municipalities of Hedensted and Horsens; among other designations, it is designated as a Natura 2000 area.

One of the distinctive landscapes is Tunø, with its varied nature, steep cliffs, coastal meadows and completely untouched wooded bogs. Tunø is car-free and is considered an island with a strong local culture. The Tunø ferry from Hou is the only ferry connection to Tunø; the crossing takes approximately 55 minutes.

Paths and routes

Near Hou, a signposted coastal path follows a 10-kilometre circular route along the beaches from Hou to Hølken Strand and then back through Hou. On Tunø, an 8-kilometre circular walk runs along high cliffs; along the way, there are opportunities to take breaks at quiet bathing beaches. The Norsminde–Kysing Næs circular route is approximately three kilometres long and passes through the harbour environment and along grass paths around the peninsula.

On Gyllingnæs, a 9-kilometre coastal path leads to the southern tip of Kalsenakke. There are also opportunities for coastal fishing in Lerdrup Bay, on the Kattegat side and near Horskær. The coastal meadows at Horskær are closed to visitors from 1 March to 1 August to protect breeding birds.

Cycling

Route 3 of the Kulturringen is a 19-kilometre signposted cycle route. It leads south from Odder towards Horsens Fjord, passes through Hou and continues south-west towards Søby and Gylling.

History and culture

Odder Museum presents exhibitions on topics relating to local cultural history. It also offers outdoor walks that introduce visitors to historical traces in the landscape and the cultural environment.

Bjørnkær Voldsted is a fortification probably built in the 13th century, with two mounds protected by a double rampart. The site in Odder Municipality is open to the public; there is a car park and signage on site.

Gylling Church dates from the late 12th century and preserves an original Romanesque nave and an original Romanesque chancel. Its distinctive feature is also its stilt tower, a type of construction that is rare in Denmark and found almost exclusively in East Jutland.

Built in 1883, Odder Vand- og Dampmølle is an outstanding example of the last generation of Danish custom mills. It shows the condition of the mill from the time when production ceased in 1955. Visitors can experience three floors with machinery and mechanical equipment from the period before electronics were introduced into industry.

Gylling Mølle was first built in 1860. After collapsing in a storm in 1906, it was rebuilt in the same location in 1908. An exhibition provides information about the mill’s function and history. It is open on the first Sunday of the month and otherwise by appointment.

Regional produce

At Brandbygegaard, organic cider, sparkling wine, beer and spirits are produced from home-grown fruit, berries and herbs. The products are made by hand in small quantities. Throughout the year, Brandbygegaard hosts cultural events where drinks from the farm and dishes made from locally produced ingredients are served.

During the summer season, there are set times for tastings before purchase and for selling products from the distillery and winery.
