Holstebro Municipality: Art, Nature and History

At the Holstebro Art Museum, the presentation of Danish art and Danish crafts ranges from the 1930s to the present day. The museum also displays foreign art as well as collections of traditional non-Western art. The chronological span and the different collection focuses can be viewed as different approaches to art.

Culture

Nørreport Torv is home to the sculpture “The Citizens of Holstebro”, which consists of casts of twelve citizens from Holstebro. “Vandkunsten” was designed as a modern city gate at the upper end of the Nørregade pedestrian zone. The bronze sculpture “Woman on a Cart”, also known as “Maren å æ woun”, became a symbol of the cultural revolution in Holstebro. Holstebro also offers a free guided city tour focusing on art, history and architecture.

History

The Holstebro Museum presents the dramatic and vibrant history of the area, from the first people in Denmark to the modern city. Nørre Vosborg is a cultural heritage site with exceptional architecture and 800 years of Danish history. At the same time, it is a lively and dynamic cultural and events centre.

Hjerl Hede, an open-air museum, is located near Vinderup in Holstebro Municipality. The Old Village at Hjerl Hede comprises preserved and reconstructed buildings from the 16th to the 19th century. Hjerl Hede also includes the Jutland Forest Museum and the Peat Museum, where regional history, old farming methods and crafts are brought back to life.

The Strandingsmuseum St. George presents the history of H.M.S. “St. George” and H.M.S. “Defence”, which sank off Thorsminde in 1811.

Nature and Trails

National Cycle Route 1, the West Coast Route, can be cycled through Holstebro Municipality from Vedersø Klit to Thorsminde. National Cycle Route 12, the Limfjord Route, can be cycled through Holstebro Municipality from Handbjerg to the municipal boundary at Sønder Lem Vig. The different route configurations make it possible to compare cycling stages according to their stated starting and ending points.

The area around Tvis Mill includes woodland, meadows, a river valley, heathland and dry grassland. It also preserves cultural and historical traces of Tvis Monastery, brickmaking and marl extraction. The Tvis Mill Nature Laboratory includes two short hiking trails on natural paths.

The visitor area of Holstebro Municipality extends in the west from Thorsminde and Vedersø Klit across Holstebro and its surrounding area to Vinderup and Handbjerg in the east. For planning purposes, the cycling routes, short nature trails and historic sites can be considered as different points of focus.

Agriculture

At Landbrugets Oplevelsesplads, families and anyone interested can experience Danish agriculture up close and meet calves, piglets, goats and lambs. During seasonal themed days, visitors can taste ice cream made fresh from cow’s cream there.
