Holiday apartment in Herning Municipality – Art, Lakes and Nature Trails

Herning Municipality combines impressive evidence of industrial and regional history with contemporary art, lake landscapes and trails through forests, heathland and hilly terrain. The Søby Brown Coal Museum, HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, and the natural areas around Løvbakkerne, Fuglsang Sø and Præstbjerg represent a range of different cultural and landscape experiences.

Culture and History

The Søby Brown Coal Museum brings to life the working and everyday lives of the families and workers who were active in the Søby brown coal mining area. Guided tours also include a drive through the surrounding landscape. The museum features films, machinery, tools, household furnishings and 1,500 photographs; there is also a large playground.

At HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, contemporary art is presented in connection with Steven Holl's distinctive architecture. Each year, the museum presents three to four exhibitions featuring important Danish and international contemporary artists. The Herningsholm Museum is housed in Herning's oldest building, dating from 1579. Elia is a hemispherical sculpture with a diameter of 60 metres and a spherical cap rising 11 metres above it.

The Tekstilmuseet shows how the textile industry shaped Midtjylland and its development. At Børnefabrikken, children can playfully experience working in a textile factory by sewing clothes and transporting them onwards by train. The Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum preserves around 6,000 works by the two artists.

At the Herningsholm Museum, Museum Midtjylland tells the story of life on the heath, the stories inspired by it and the role of the heath in the textile industry, which later shaped the region. At the Bryggeriet Herning restaurant, visitors can sample the brewery's own beers brewed on site, including Herning IPA.

Nature and Trails

Løvbakke Nature Centre is part of the tranquil Løvbakkerne natural and woodland area. Its facilities include the nature school, an exhibition, Løvbakkehuset and a wildlife park. The approximately 17-kilometre Løvbakkerne cycling route, among others, passes through this natural area.

Præstbjerg Nature Centre is located in a landscape with hilly heathland, oak scrub, viewpoints, small woods and lakes. A 1.3-kilometre accessible circular trail leads around Præstbjerg Sø. There are viewpoints and benches along the way. Præstbjerg Plantation also has a 5.6-kilometre riding trail.

More than 80 works of art are integrated into the forest at Deep Forest Art Land. A marked, five-kilometre adventure trail in the shape of a figure eight leads through the area. It can be used on foot and with pushchairs, wheelchairs and walking sticks. The route passes through a hilly landscape with a stream, meadow and traces of the Ice Age.

Lakes and Water

Fuglsang Sø is located just north of Herning and covers 28 hectares. There are two bathing beaches on its eastern shore. Signposted paths and a disc golf course can be found around the lake. Blå Rum at Fuglsang Sø provides the setting for activities on, in and by the water.

Getting There and City Centre

Herning railway station has train connections to Copenhagen, Aarhus and Skjern. The bus station is also located in the same station square. Public car parks in Herning city centre are free of charge; there are short-stay and long-stay parking spaces.
