Ydø: Fjord landscape, cycling routes and history

Ydø is an attractive starting point for anyone who wants to combine a trip along Nakskow Fjord with cycling routes, landscape history and special wildlife experiences. Before the major land reclamation following the storm surge of 1872, the village was one of ten islands in the southern part of Nakskow Fjord. This history continues to shape the character of the area today: former seabed, dikes, coastal meadows and historic sites tell the story of a landscape that has changed several times.

Cycling along Nakskow Fjord

For active days on holiday, the “Langs fjorden” cycling route is a good option. It runs along the dike section between Nakskov and Albuen and then returns to Nakskov via smaller country roads. The landscape of the “Lost Island Kingdom” is best experienced by bicycle, following the crest of the dike from Nakskov to Albuen. The Munkeruten, also known as Digestien, also runs along the dike of Nakskow Fjord and passes the former islands of Ydø, Langø and Vejlø. For travel planning in the summer months, the “Vesta” postal boat is also of interest: it operates according to a fixed timetable in June, July and August.

In the Middle Ages, Albuen was an important fishing and trading site and was first mentioned in 1416. The Lodshuset on Albuen dates from 1873 and serves as a nature centre and living museum. Protected nature and unusual wildlife experiences

From Ydø, the Krumodde Albuen extends approximately 7.5 kilometres northwards. Cultural and historical discoveries

The Kappel Stubmølle is another historical experience to choose from. It was built around 1730 and operated until 1935. In summer, the mill is open every Tuesday afternoon; members of the mill guild are present and talk about the mill. When the weather permits, the sails are attached to the blades and the mill is operated.
