Holiday apartments on Møn Island: cliffs, culture and nature
The landscape on the island of Møn begins with Møns Klint: a seven-kilometre-long coastline of white cliffs rising up to 128 metres above the sea. Møn and Nyord have been designated by the International Dark-Sky Association as the Nordic region’s first Dark Sky Park and first Dark Sky Community. Between the coast, night sky, history and art, this destination reveals many different sides.
Nature
Knudshoved Odde is a 15-kilometre-long peninsula on the Smålandsfarvandet. Its landscape includes beach ridges, dunes, open grasslands, forests and lakes; rare animal and plant species can also be found there. At the Avnø Nature Centre, visitors can observe seals as well as waterbirds and migratory birds from a former control tower. Paths lead to suitable observation points.
At Naturrum Præstø Fjord, bird and plant observation are combined with exploring the shallow waters. There are also exhibitions about life on the fjord, stories and nature films, as well as the option of staying overnight for one night. Fjordposten Præstø Strand has an accessible toilet and a firm path suitable for wheelchairs. Fjordposten Roneklint Fyr contains an information room with exhibitions about birds and the cultural history of the lighthouse; there is also a boat shelter for overnight stays.
Culture
In Vordingborg, Danmarks Borgcenter combines a museum, the Vordingborg Castle ruins and Gåsetårnet into a medieval experience. At the same time, the centre is an interactive experience centre for the whole family, where visitors can explore medieval castles, power and history independently. Gåsetårnet is 36 metres high and the only surviving tower of the former Vordingborg Castle. The castle ruins also include the historic ring wall and the ruins of St Andrew’s Church; the site is suitable for walks, historical exploration and picnics.
The Historical-Botanical Garden in Vordingborg has preserved old peasant plants since 1921, traditionally used for culture, beauty and healing. Fanefjord Church is known for its exceptional lime paintings and beautiful medieval furnishings. Møns Museum has been located since 1958 in Empiregården, an old merchant’s house in Stege. At Psykiatrisk Museum Oringe, the history of psychiatry is presented through authentic objects and exhibitions in former hospital buildings.
Liselund Romantic Garden is considered Denmark’s best-preserved romantic garden complex and tells the story of its founder Antoine de la Calmette and his wife Lisa. 44Møen is a small art village with facilities for sound art, educational programmes and working artists. Stege is one of Denmark’s oldest market towns and bears both medieval and more recent historical influences.
Experiences
GeoCenter Møns Klint offers more than 20 indoor and outdoor experiences. These include guided tours, a climbing and rope course, a 3D cinema and mountain bike tours. Guided fossil-hunting expeditions lead to the beach below the cliffs, where fossils from 70 million years ago can be found. For mountain biking on the paths of Klinteskoven, GeoCenter rents out bicycles, while the route and pace are adapted to the respective group. The minimum age is 12.
The Møn Biosphere’s summer calendar offers excursions into the landscape from July to October, activities involving wild gardens, boat trips in shallow coastal areas and tastings focused on sustainable coexistence between people and nature. Along the Camønoen hiking trail, 250 apple trees grow, featuring old local varieties such as Spejlsby Pigeon and Borre Kærneæble.
Water and paths
Dronning Alexandrines Bro, also known as Mønbroen or Ulvsundbroen, connects Kalvehave and Koster across the Ulvsund between Zealand and Møn. Kirkeskoven is a five-minute walk from Vordingborg’s main street and is used for walking and running. Oringepynten is open to the public and can be completely circumnavigated on foot. The area offers old trees, water, green spaces and views of Vordingborg Nordhavn and the Farø Bridges.
Vordingborg Nordhavn is a marina with views of Gåsetårnet and is just a short walk from Vordingborg’s historic town centre. Vordingborg’s coast has bathing beaches as well as opportunities for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing and underwater experiences.
