Construction of a large brick church, very costly for its time, began in the 1090s on the site of today’s Skt. Mikaels Kirke. The church was completely rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century. The hymn writer Thomas Kingo was born in Slangerup in 1634; in 1668, Thomas Hansen Kingo was appointed to a parish in Slangerup and bequeathed, among other things, a brass chandelier to Skt. Mikaels Kirke in his will. Guided tours where you bring your own guide must be arranged in advance with the church office.

Slangerup Miniby shows the town as it looked around 1900 and is built to a scale of 1:10. Since 1996, the Slangerup Miniby association has worked on the model town. The Old Forge and the exhibition in Slangerup, operated by the local history association for the Slangerup area, offer further insight into local history. During the season from 1 May to 31 October, the Old Forge is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On the last Saturday of each month, the fire burns in the forge during the season.

Nature Between Town, Forest and Lake

Kirkeengen is an area of wilder nature close to the town in Slangerup. The area has been protected since 1945 and provides a habitat for numerous summer birds, including the blackcap, nightingale and garden warbler. Nearby, Buresø lies in a tunnel valley southeast of the town. There are marked trails, a bathing area with a bathing jetty, fire pits and places for primitive overnight stays. Bus route 337 between Hillerød and Slangerup passes south of Lystrup Skov.

Mountain bikers will find Djævlesporet in the forest. The technically demanding singletrack is ridden clockwise as a one-way route. The 13.8-kilometre mountain bike route starts at Lystrupvej/Kratvej and consists of two connected loops. Another cycling option is the 10.6-kilometre route between Frederikssund railway station and the Slangerup bus stop, which passes through open landscapes.

Simple stays in nature are also part of the regional offering: Kratmølleskoven has a primitive overnight site with five hammock stands, a fire pit and a table with benches. The site can be reached directly on foot or by bicycle. In Lystrup Skov, there is a primitive overnight site at Lystrup Enge with two small shelters and two fire pits. The fire pits have benches, and there are also two picnic table sets; from one of the fire pits, the view extends across the meadows of Lystrup.

The Engblommen-and-Firlingen shelters consist of two mini shelters with fire pits and a small bench. Each shelter accommodates two to three overnight guests. From the car park at Skovlegepladsen near Kratvej 2, 3550 Slangerup, an approximately 1- to 2-kilometre footpath leads there. You can also reach the shelters by taking bus route 337 to the Lystrup Skov (Lystrupvej) stop and then following the same approximately 1- to 2-kilometre footpath.
