Græsted – Discover forests, lakes and trails

Græsted combines extensive forest landscapes, lakes and surprising traces of history. Wielandts Sø is a dammed lake in the northeastern part of Græsted Hegn, with a rich variety of animal and plant life. This makes the area suitable for travellers who do not want to limit their stay to a single attraction, but would rather choose between walking trails, nature observation, cycling tours and cultural discoveries.

Forest trails and lakes for different kinds of holiday days

Both the Sundhedssporet and the Hjertestien trails begin at Wielandts Sø. Anyone who prefers to plan a day around a clear route idea rather than a fixed sightseeing programme will find two different starting points here. In Græsted Aggebo Hegn, the “Find vej” orienteering activity, with 30 easy-to-recognise control points, also invites visitors to explore the landscape attentively.

Nature observation is also part of the character of the area. Græsted Aggebo Hegn has a good population of deer; you may also see or hear ravens there. Late summer and autumn are suitable for mushroom picking. In clear weather, the view from the “Længslen efter Sverige” viewpoint reaches as far as Kullen in Sweden. For a day planned around a picnic, a Bålhus and a barbecue area with tables and benches are available at the northern car park by Wielandts Sø. There are four car parks in the forest in total: one by the lake in the north and three on the southern side.

Active excursions around Græsted

Anyone who wants to explore the area on foot can plan “En tur i Hegnet”. The walking route begins at Græsted Station, ends at Helsinge Station and leads along paths and forest roads through the lush forest landscapes of North Zealand. The Græsted Perimetersti encircles the entire town of Græsted. Nearby, a 12 km walking trail also runs along the shore of Søborg Sø and around the lake.

For cycling days, the signposted cycle route 33 is a good option. From Græsted Station, it follows Græsted Stationsvej, Holtvej and Ørbakkevej. The 27 km route connects Gilleleje Station with Frederiksborg Castle and can be cycled year-round. Horse riders are allowed to ride on all paths and unpaved roads in Græsted Aggebo Hegn that are wider than 2.5 m.

History, crafts and special places

Græsted also offers specific destinations for culturally minded holiday days. Græsted Station and its railway depot were inaugurated in 1880 as the terminus of the Gribskovbanen railway. Visits are scheduled for Saturday afternoons from around 12 noon. Aggebo Hegn is also home to a Bronze Age burial mound approximately 3,500 years old, traces of so-called ridge-and-furrow fields and a stone wall more than 200 years old.

You can experience a special tradition at Kulsvierhytten by Dams Sø: at the end of every August, volunteers from Aggebo Kulsvierlaug burn charcoal there using the traditional method in a charcoal kiln. Shelter No. 2 at Kulsvierhytten can accommodate around four overnight guests and is reached via an approximately 300 m long path from a small car park on Aggebo Skovvej. Fishing is free at Wielandts Sø; anglers aged 18 to 65 require a fishing licence.
