Vårø between Village History and Birdlife

Vårø combines a distinctive village history with the open landscape of Monnet. The defining features include the 126-hectare Monnet beach meadow, the Vårø Knude moraine hill and the history of the local community.

The farms of the Vårø Bylaug have used Monnet collectively as grazing land for centuries. At the same time, the beach meadow is a habitat for several wading bird species, including oystercatchers, ringed plovers, lapwings and redshanks. A path of around two kilometres across the meadows leads to the Vårø Knude moraine hill. The hill lies at the southernmost point of Monnet and is eight metres high.

At Vårø Knude, at the outer end of Monnet, you can enjoy the sunset over the South Funen Archipelago while listening to the migratory birds. The walking route around the field by the shelter site near Vårø also offers views of Monnet and the South Funen Archipelago. This allows you to combine different ways of enjoying the outdoors: a longer walk across the meadows, a circuit around the field or a later stay at the tip of the landscape.

Birdlife and Important Visiting Times

On Monnet, you may move along the coast and across the beach meadow. However, restrictions apply during the breeding season from 15 March to 1 July. This period should therefore be taken into account when planning your trip if you wish to explore the landscape or observe birds. Monnet's birdwatching shelter is located approximately 1.5 metres above sea level. Sand martins have nesting burrows in Vårø Knude. Anyone interested in nature observation can deliberately incorporate these different locations and habitats into their daily itinerary.

Village, Community and Historical Traces

Vårø is a village of the winding-road village type. Local traditions also shape the character of the place: the landowners continue to form the Vårø Bylaug and elect an Oldermann as chairman every year. Events affecting the community are discussed at meetings in the Vårø Smedje.

The past is linked to further specific stories. The parish house of the Bjerreby parish stood in Vårø from the 17th to the 20th century. In 1806, the smallholder Rasmus Hansen from Vårø was praised for the fruit-tree nursery he had established himself. The Brændevinsstenene served as a landing pier when spirits were smuggled to Ærø.
