Castle History and Historic Discoveries

Tranekær Castle is Denmark’s oldest secular inhabited house. The castle represents the long history of the area and is also the highlight of the 22-kilometre Tranekær Castle Route. The route passes through forests, open fields and historic villages. Anyone who would like to explore the area by bicycle will find a clearly described route with several different landscape impressions.

Tranekær Church also offers a special detail of cultural and historical interest: the altarpiece created in 1847 was painted by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and was his last. The Medicinal Gardens in Tranekær have the largest collection of medicinal plants in Northern Europe, with more than 800 different plants. The signs in the individual gardens and at the arboretum give the Danish and Latin name, medicinal significance and country of origin for each plant. This makes the visit particularly informative for anyone who wants not only to look at plants, but also to learn about their uses and origins.

All the plants in the Children’s Medicinal Garden are edible. This provides a dedicated area for discovery during a holiday day when children can get to know the plant world in a direct way. TICKON – Tranekær International Centre for Art and Nature offers another way of experiencing nature. Since 1993, more than 20 Danish and international artists have created works in the park. The art installations and sculptures are made of natural materials and designed to slowly decay and return to earth and stones. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset.

The area around Tranekær includes forests, hedgerows and marshland shaped by the ice 20,000 years ago. These landscape features complement the cultural attractions with a geological and natural-history perspective.

Hiking, Cycling and Special Experiences

For hikers, the Archipelago Trail is a footpath intended exclusively for hikers. Blue pictograms with a small white hiker and the inscription “Øhavsstien” mark the route. The 9-kilometre section between Tranekær and Dageløkke runs along the west coast of Langeland. Those who prefer to travel by bicycle can consider the 22-kilometre Tranekær Castle Route as a separate excursion option. The two routes therefore appeal to different preferences, without requiring you to limit your holiday days to just one form of exercise.

The Langeland Beekeepers’ Association offers another special activity: a guided tour of honey extraction in a beekeeper’s suit can be booked via the association’s website. This makes it easier to find a suitable starting point for planning your own trip, without the accommodation itself needing to have specific facilities.
