Discover Limassol
Accommodation in Limassol
Limassol offers several ways to explore the destination: medieval heritage in and around the Medieval Castle, archaeological finds spanning a long period, a theatre museum and large-scale sculptures at Molos. A self-guided route leads through the historic city centre; the Limassol region adds landscapes and wine traditions to the urban experience. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to distinguish between these different interests and consider what you want to shape your stay.
Medieval Heritage and Museums
Limassol Medieval Castle was built over an early Christian basilica dating from the 4th to 7th centuries AD and a Middle Byzantine structure dating from the 10th to 11th centuries AD. Its construction history therefore reaches back to structures that are much older than the castle itself. The collection at the Cyprus Medieval Museum in the Medieval Castle of Lemesos (Limassol) includes ceramics, gravestones, silver plates from the Byzantine period, weapons, crosses and coins. These varied objects bring the medieval focus to life through tangible artefacts.
The Limassol Archaeological Museum covers a different span of time: it displays artefacts from the Neolithic period and encompasses more than 9,000 years of history. Compared with the medieval collection, its perspective reaches far back into earlier eras. Visitors especially interested in archaeological finds and long time spans will find a different approach to history here than in the collection inside the castle.
Other venues have their own focus. The Cyprus Theatre Museum opened in 2012 and is located in the Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre. The Takis Pattichis Museum of Industrial Pharmacy is next to Limassol Medieval Castle. Limassol Municipal Museum also serves as the home of the city archives. Theatre history, industrial pharmacy and the municipal archive function thus broaden the picture presented by the medieval and archaeological collections.
City Centre, Sculptures and Marina
A self-guided route through Limassol's historic city centre offers step-by-step directions, historical information and photographs of the attractions on its own website. This provides orientation materials and images of the route's stops alongside the collections. The different options can be distinguished by interest: museum objects, historical information along a route, or large-scale art in public spaces.
The collection at Prokymea (Molos) Sculpture Park includes more than 20 large-scale sculptures; the park runs along the Molos seafront promenade. The works are on a different scale from the objects in the museums. Limassol Marina is another urban attraction with its own character: it offers berths for yachts both in the water and on land.
Limassol in its Regional Context
The wider regional view of Limassol extends beyond the city. The capital of the Lemesos region lies between Amathus to the east and Kourion to the west. The Lemesos region stretches up the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains. In the wine villages of the Krassochoria, long-standing wine-growing traditions are maintained; they still produce Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine.
Choosing the Right Focus for Your Holiday Apartment
When looking for a holiday apartment in Limassol, your interests can guide your choice: would you mainly like to explore medieval artefacts, look at archaeological periods, include theatre history, or discover the sculptures at Molos? The self-guided route and regional landscapes also offer different perspectives. This way, you can choose your starting point based on your planned focus, rather than treating all the attractions as one uniform itinerary.
