Kalavasos: Copper History and Church Art
Accommodation in Kalavasos
Kalavasos lies on the west bank of the Vasilikos. Its history is linked to copper mining; the Church of Panagia Titiotissa adds Byzantine architecture and icon art, while a cycling route runs through the village. Tenta, a Neolithic settlement with a distinctive conical roof, is also near Kalavasos. These different themes give your trip several possible focuses.
Traces of copper mining
Mavri Sykia was an important copper-mining site in both ancient and modern times. Modern mining in the Kalavasos area began at the Mavridia mine in 1937. The mines mentioned here therefore represent different historical periods: Mavri Sykia is associated with two eras, and Mavridia with the start of modern mining in the region.
The operating periods and output figures for Lantaria and Petra also provide concrete measures of the mining history. Lantaria was the smallest of the Kalavasos mines. It operated from 1961 to 1964 and produced 65,000 tonnes of copper-bearing ore. The Petra Mine began operating earlier than Lantaria and was in operation from 1953 to 1966. During this period, 290,000 tonnes were extracted there from one of the region’s largest deposits. The figures relate to operating periods of different lengths and therefore tell different chapters of the mining story.
Panagia Titiotissa: Architecture and icons
The Church of Panagia Titiotissa features Byzantine architecture and a cross-in-square floor plan. The term describes the basic design: a cross inscribed within a square. The church contains a carved wooden iconostasis with old icons. Miniatures depict the twelve Apostles and other saints—specific subjects that differ from the architecture of the building.
A double-sided icon from the 16th century is considered important. The Virgin Mary is depicted on the front, and the Crucifixion on the back. Together with the iconostasis, it offers a second way to experience the church: alongside the building’s design, the images and their subjects take centre stage. The feast day of Panagia Titiotissa is September 8.
Tenta and the cycling route
The Neolithic settlement of Tenta, near Kalavasos, dates to 7000 BC and is covered by a distinctive conical roof. The striking roof gives the historic site a distinctive feature; its date places it long before the mining periods described above. Tenta thus adds another, much earlier chapter to the area’s history.
Those interested in cycling will find a specific option in the Ancient Vasilikos Extended route, which runs through Kalavasos. Check current route conditions before setting off.
Which focus suits your trip?
A trip focused on the cycling route offers a different emphasis from exploring church art or mining history. The early settlement of Tenta opens up yet another historical perspective. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kalavasos, the mix of these interests you want can be a practical starting point for choosing where to stay.
