In the Municipality of Cista Provo, archaeological sites, medieval tombstones and churches tell different chapters of the area’s history. Cista Velika – Velika and Mala Crljivica is especially prominent: the site is one of the two Croatian components of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”. Stećci and Archaeological Traces in Cista Velika
The Crljivica archaeological zone is in Cista Velika, directly beside the main Trilj–Imotski road, and extends for about 200 metres. It also includes the route of the ancient Salona–Tilurij–Nove–Narona road. This means that both a well-known historical road link and today’s main road are located within the area of the site. The stated measurement describes the extent of the archaeological zone, not a walking distance.
Another archaeological site, Crkvine, lies in the west of Cista Velika, about 100 metres south of the Trilj–Imotski road. Finds there include an Early Christian baptistery and two ancient cisterns. On Osoje Hill, the Osoje-Mandarića strana archaeological zone includes a prehistoric hillfort. Its plateau measures about 170 × 160 metres, and visible remains of megalithic walls have been preserved. The hillfort may date to the Iron Age.
The Stećci also vary by location and description. At the Zadužbina site, about ten decorated tombstones have been preserved; their motifs can broadly be dated to the 15th century. The Lazine site in Biorine is a medieval cemetery with thirteen Stećci. A dry-stone wall divides them into two groups, and the tombstones were created in the 14th and 15th centuries. Churches and Historic Architectural Styles
In Dobranje, the old Church of St John the Baptist was built in 1740. It is considered an example of 18th-century vernacular architecture. Another church from this period stands in Svib: the old Church of St Anthony of Padua was built in 1747 and is also classified as an example of this architectural style. Together, the two churches offer a tangible glimpse of 18th-century buildings in different parts of the municipality.
Dobranje is also home to the Sklop Vuletić building complex, which includes the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk. The complex was built in the 18th century with pronounced defensive features. In contrast, the parish Church of St Peter the Apostle in Cista Provo was built from dressed stone in 1914. The different architectural styles and periods of construction offer several distinct topics for families interested in cultural history to explore.
Hills, a Cave and Nature
South of the centre of Cista Velika, Gradina Vitrenik stands at an altitude of 650 metres. A stone defensive ring built using dry-stone techniques is very well preserved there. The Ilkovaća Cave is also on Vitrenik; finds point to settlement dating back to the Neolithic. These two features represent different aspects of local history: the visible fortification and the cave’s evidence reaching far back into the past.
Gradina in Cista Velika is a separate site: it directly controlled the old road leading east from the Cetina Valley, which is still in use today. Several legally protected species of wild orchids also grow in the Municipality of Cista Provo. Cista Provo lies on the western edge of the Imotska krajina.
