Culture and History
The Church of St. Demetrius is considered Svishtov’s oldest fully preserved architectural monument. It dates from the late 15th or early 16th century and stands in the area of the former medieval fortress. The Kaleto fortress site preserves stone walls from the Byzantine-Bulgarian building period of the 12th to 14th centuries. It is located on a steep hill above the river north of central Svishtov.
The Nikolay Pavlovich Art Gallery houses more than 5,000 works by hundreds of artists. Its programme includes exhibitions, readings, concerts, competitions and creative workshops for children. The Aleko Konstantinov House Museum in Svishtov is included among Bulgaria’s 100 national tourist sites. Its interior recreates the setting of a prosperous 19th-century merchant’s house; the museum also displays photographs, books, letters and personal belongings of the writer.
Svishtov is associated with the founding of Bulgaria’s first Chitalishte in 1856. The later building is described as an architectural landmark. Svishtov’s Saborna Church is described as an example of Late Revival architecture. Its construction is attributed to the master builder Nikola Fichev (Kolyu Ficheto), the iconostasis was made by Anton Peshov, and the building is recognised as a cultural monument of national importance.
