Akhtopol: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Ahtopol is situated on a small rocky peninsula by the sea, measuring approximately 500 by 300 metres. As a small seaside resort, the town is not a major holiday destination and appeals to visitors seeking peace and quiet. At the same time, Ahtopol offers a beach. Culture

The old town preserves parts of its medieval fortifications alongside restored traditional wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. It also includes the Church of Saints Constantine and Helena from the 17th century, with its original carved iconostasis.

The late antique and medieval fortress of Ahtopol is open to visitors free of charge all year round. It is located on a small peninsula of approximately 5–6 decares; a large part of its grounds overlaps with the modern town.

History

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord was built in 1796 and is part of the Saint Yana monastery complex. It survived the fire that destroyed Ahtopol in 1918.

Anchors found in Ahtopol’s aqueducts attest to the seafaring activities of the peninsula’s inhabitants across various historical periods. A stone axe and ceramic fragments from Ahtopol also provide evidence of settlement during the Late Stone Age and the Early Bronze Age. Ahtopol is additionally associated with Thracian artefacts from the Bronze Age.

The Greek School in Ahtopol has hosted exhibitions associated with a summer academy and a symposium.

Museum

The “History of the Anchor” Museum is located about 250 metres from Ahtopol’s pier, on the shore of Ahtopol Bay within Strandzha Nature Park.

Its collection includes ship cannons, mortars, coins, ceramics, bells and other equipment recovered from Turkish, Greek, French, Russian, Byzantine and Roman shipwrecks. The museum also preserves Ahtopol’s old harbour lighthouse.

Nature and Trails

Strandzha Nature Park is located near Ahtopol and offers an excursion opportunity from the town. Hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels are available in the Strandzha area near Ahtopol.

The municipal route “Ahtopol – Mouth of the Veleka River” is 5 km long, takes approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes, and is suitable for mountain biking.
