Archaeology at the historic complex

In the village of Neofit Rilski, the historic “Neolithic Settlement” complex presents the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. On display are Chalcolithic houses, pottery objects and a pile-dwelling. These specific exhibits offer different ways to explore early history: you can look at house designs, learn about pottery or discover the pile-dwelling as a distinct example within the complex.

The Thracian Museum in the same historic complex spans the period from the Chalcolithic to the Second Bulgarian Empire. Paintings, weapons and household objects are displayed alongside reconstructions of ships and wagons, as well as replicas of Thracian treasures. Frescoes from the “Alexandrovka Tomb” can also be seen in the complex. The subject matter ranges from everyday objects and visual representations to reconstructed vehicles and treasures. Visitors can also try archery on the grounds.

Folk art and rural life

In Gabarnitsa, traditional customs, songs and dances offer another glimpse into the culture of the area: a local folk ensemble and an orchestra perform them for tourists. Those more interested in rural life can also visit the “Rodna Stryaha” ethnographic complex there. It is housed in a restored old house that has been converted into a museum of rural life. The museum collection featured demonstrations of hand knitting and weaving—a direct link to traditional crafts that complements the museum’s themes.

The “Nevsha Sings and Dances” festival takes place in Nevsha and has established itself as a celebration of folk art. Traditional performances in Gabarnitsa are thus complemented by a festival in Nevsha, with each putting its own emphasis on customs, music and dance. As you plan your trip, consider whether you are mainly interested in exhibitions and historical objects or would also like to explore folklore and folk art.

Protected landscapes near Nevsha

Nature also shapes the attractions around Vetrino. Taushan Tepe is a Natura 2000 site protected under Directive 92/43/EEC, located within the land territory of Nevsha. It preserves ancient steppe vegetation with dozens of rare plant species. One notable plant is the endangered “Trizhilkova Metlichina”: in Bulgaria, it is found only on Taushan Tepe hill near Nevsha. These features make the hill a distinct point of interest for anyone interested in rare plants and steppe vegetation.

Nevsha is also home to two protected landscapes with different conservation aims. “Goliamo i Malko Bulo” covers 1,975 decares and protects a characteristic landscape as well as the habitats of protected plant and animal species. The “Trizhilkova Metlichina” protected landscape safeguards a plant species and its habitat. The ecotrail near Nevsha runs entirely through a protected area and leads to the “Goliamo i Malko Bulo” natural monuments. Several cycling routes have also been established in the vicinity of Nevsha. Nature lovers can therefore distinguish between a destination focused on protecting plants and habitats, the ecotrail and the cycling routes, without treating these as one and the same route.

History in the Nevsha area

Alongside its natural attractions, the Nevsha area has remains from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages: three fortresses and their associated settlements, as well as a rock monastery, rock-cut cells and necropolises. These sites add further historic locations and periods to the archaeological themes of the complex in Neofit Rilski. When choosing a holiday apartment for your trip, you might first consider whether you would prefer to focus on archaeological collections, folk art, protected landscapes or historic sites. Your interests can help you decide how to shape your stay in Vetrino.

Another place within the destination, Nevsha, is connected with the nature and cultural attractions mentioned above. Other destinations at the same level: Provadia, Beloslav, Valchi Dol, Avren, Varna, Dolni Chiflik, Devnya.
