Tutrakantsi lies within the Provadiysko-Royaksko Plateau Special Protection Area, BG0002038. A total of 160 species have been recorded in this area, including 36 species listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria. History and Culture
An ancient fortress is recorded 2.5 km south-southwest of Tutrakantsi, in the Katrandzhiya locality. A settlement from Roman times is recorded 1 km from the burial mound associated with Tutrakantsi. A single burial mound is also recorded in the Maria locality associated with Tutrakantsi.
Ovech Fortress was inhabited intermittently from the mid-3rd century until the end of the 17th century and is protected by rocks 11 to 25 metres high. It preserves the foundations of three medieval churches, as well as 13 cisterns used to store rainwater and grain. It is reached via an educational eco-trail and stairs; it also has a 79-metre-deep well. In 2008, Ovech Fortress was declared an immovable cultural monument of national importance.
Provadia-Solnitsata preserves the remains of Europe's oldest salt-producing centre, dating from 5600โ4350 BC. Later, Provadia-Solnitsata became the first prehistoric urban centre on the European continent, dated to 4700โ4350 BC.
The Historical Museum in Provadia preserves approximately 15,000 cultural and historical objects from Provadia and settlements in the former district. Its collection includes material from prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Ottoman period and modern regional history.
Around 30 local folk customs have been preserved in the Municipality of Provadia. More than 20 authentic folklore ensembles operate through the municipality's community cultural centres.
