Kiten: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Around two kilometres northeast of Kiten lies Mukhaliysko Kale, a late antique and medieval fortification in the Tapanite locality. At its foot is a rock monastery dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Rock cells are located in the slopes of Mukhaliysko Kale, approximately 2.5 kilometres northeast of Kiten. The rock monastery near Kiten is situated on north-facing rocky cliffs overlooking Blaskovo.

Culture and History

The eight hermit cells in Tapanite are listed as a protected historical site in the Kiten area; the site covers 1 hectare and is registered under number 226. The monastery cells are arranged on three levels and connected by narrow, tall openings. Their largest room is a natural cave. Rock drawings are present at the foot of the cliffs near the entrance. The uppermost cell contains an east-facing altar. The monastery cells can be accessed from the plateau through a chimney-like passage as well as through separate entrances to the individual cells.

The remains of an old settlement lie on a vegetation-covered plateau; at the northwestern edge of the plateau, it is connected to a fortress. A stone staircase is located on the southern side of the monastery.

Routes

An easy hiking route is officially described in the Provadia area. It leads from either an eastern or western entrance to Kaleto to Shashkanite and is estimated to take around 40 minutes. This is followed by an easy section of approximately 15 minutes to a Thracian sanctuary and an easy section of about one hour to the rock monastery of St. George. In the direction of Kiten, a rocky ridge is described approximately 3–4 kilometres from the first group of monasteries.
