Protected Landscapes and Distinctive Stone Pillars

The Municipality of Aksakovo includes part of Golden Sands Nature Park and part of the Pobiti Kamani protected area. Pobiti Kamani is part of the Natura 2000 network. It protects important inland sand habitats with characteristic flora, vegetation and wildlife. The landscape differs from the usual idea of sand: amid exposed Eocene sands stand upright stone pillars that resemble a stone forest. Those interested in nature and landforms will find this a distinctive focus for their trip.

Birdlife is also a feature: 184 bird species have been recorded in Batova. Of these, 50 are listed in Bulgaria’s Red Data Book, and 80 are of European conservation importance. These figures convey the scale of the recorded biodiversity without requiring visitors to spot any particular bird.

Churches and Fishing Culture

Several churches offer insights into different periods of local history. The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Botevo was built in 1867 with the Sultan’s permission and was later designated a local architectural cultural monument. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Izvorsko dates from 1885. In Aksakovo, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was ready for its first liturgy in 1906; its oldest icons are on an iconostasis dating from 1900. Those interested in religious history and icon art can take these dates and connections into account when planning their trip.

The Interactive Museum “Fishing and Blue Growth” explores fishing culture and the former everyday life of fishermen, the history of fishing, and the historical and cultural factors behind its development. The “Blue Growth” strategy is also among its topics, and an interactive guide leads visitors through the exhibition rooms. Botevo is also home to the Interactive Cultural and Information Centre “Blue Growth,” located in the community centre building. An interactive table provides information about fishing, natural attractions and the resources of the local Fisheries Action Group “Varna, Asparuhovo–Beloslav–Aksakovo District.”

Horse Riding, Reservoirs and Regional Produce

There are various options for an active holiday on horseback. The Dolishte riding centre offers forest rides for visitors of all ages, led by a professional instructor. Kichevo offers horse riding for beginners and experienced riders, outdoors and indoors, in every season. The Borisovi riding centre offers routes through forests, fields, meadows, rivers and reservoirs, for both training and leisure riding. Its average elevation is 150 m. These different options can help you choose between guided forest rides, indoor riding, and routes for training or leisure.

The reservoirs offer experiences of their own. Osenovo Reservoir is considered a year-round destination for anglers and nature lovers and is located in the village of Osenovo, within the Municipality of Aksakovo. Botevo Reservoir offers opportunities for fishing and observing wild and water birds, including wild ducks, storks, snipes, swans and cormorants. Zasmano Reservoir offers opportunities for relaxation and fishing in a wooded setting.

In General Kantardzhievo, Varna Winery began operating in 2008. It includes wine processing and production, wine tourism with a tasting room, and a shop selling wine and accessories. Izvorsko Farm keeps cows on open pastures and offers dairy products with an authentic taste reminiscent of traditional recipes from years gone by. Wine and regional food products thus complement the municipality’s nature and culture offerings.
