Targovishte: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Archaeological Exposition of Targovishte is housed in the former Hadzhi Rusi School, which was built in 1907. It presents the history of the Targovishte area from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including a Chalcolithic cult scene, collections of idols, a Thracian gold treasure, a silver surgical instrument and epigraphic monuments.

The Ethnographic Exposition of Targovishte presents the culture and everyday life of the population of the Targovishte area. The Sveshtarova House was built in 1860 and houses the permanent exhibition “With the Flame of Faith” about icons and church vessels, which has been presented there since 2014. At the Nikola Simov–Kuruto House Museum, an exhibition provides information about the life and work of the standard-bearer of Botev’s cheta.

The Slaveykovo School has been a national cultural monument since 1971. Temporary exhibitions of the Regional Historical Museum–Targovishte are also held there.

Stage and Events

The State Puppet Theatre Targovishte was recognised as a state puppet theatre on 1 October 1975. It has presented productions in more than 100 locations in Bulgaria and abroad and has performed more than 200 plays for an audience of over 2.5 million spectators.

The Drama Theatre Targovishte has a large auditorium and a chamber hall. It also hosts the International Festival of Children’s Performances “Magic Curtain” and “Days of the Big Theatre in the Small Town”.

Borovo Oko Park is visited by residents and visitors to Targovishte and features a lake and colourful avenues.

Regional Context

Targovishte is part of Bulgaria’s network of wine and culinary travel destinations and is located near the cultural and historical destination “Old Capitals and Cities of the Bulgarian Kings and Patriarchs”.

The Misionis Fortress is located 7 km southwest of Targovishte and 1.6 km from the Sofia–Varna I-4 road. It supports long-term scientific and educational programmes of the Regional Historical Museum–Targovishte.
