Culture and history

The Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Michael in Pomoshtitsa was built from 1907 to 1909, consecrated in 1926, and reconsecrated on 8 November 2012.

During the Ottoman period, Pomoshtitsa was formerly known by the names Yardam or Yardam koy. The historical name Yardam is explained as meaning “help.” The settlement now known as Pomoshtitsa was recorded as Yardam in an Ottoman tax register in 1541; in 1573, it was recorded in an Ottoman tax register under the name Shukur Hebib.

In August 1877, almost the entire settlement burned down during the Russo-Turkish War. Pomoshtitsa originated from two neighborhoods known as Old Neighborhood and New Neighborhood. Old Neighborhood was also called Bogdanov neighborhood, while New Neighborhood was also called Angel neighborhood. The settlement was relocated because the plague broke out at its original site. From 1885 to 1886, several families of Aegean Bulgarians settled in Pomoshtitsa.

Pomoshtitsa Reservoir covers 93,926 decares; adjacent land is designated for a recreation base. The Pomoshtitsa Reservoir site includes a dam, an overflow, and an outlet.

The concession for Pomoshtitsa Reservoir permits aquaculture activities. Short-term recreation and entertainment are expressly permitted uses there. The concession is classified as an open municipal service concession.
