Omurtag: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

Omurtag preserves a diverse heritage of historic buildings. This includes the Church of St. Dimitar, the Menzilishka Fountain from 1779, six houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, and the Baba Ivanka Hadzhiykata House, built in 1876. This house is the last representative residential building remaining from the former Osman Pazar.

Culture

The Historical Museum of Omurtag began in 1973 as a museum collection and became a historical museum in 1994. Its exhibitions are housed in three restored buildings. The ethnographic exhibition presents urban clothing, furniture, and textiles. The archaeology hall displays evidence that the area of the city was inhabited as early as 7,000 years ago. The museum complex also offers guided talks. A special exhibit is the space suit of Bulgarian cosmonaut Alexander Alexandrov.

The Church of St. Dimitar is a three-nave basilica. It was designated a monument of art on December 17, 1971, and an architectural monument on September 3, 1972. The Otec Paisiy community center is also part of the local cultural history: it was built in 1870 and developed into an established cultural institution for the local community of Omurtag.

An Aviation Park was opened at the entrance to Omurtag in 2008. Aircraft and other equipment formerly used by the Bulgarian Air Force are displayed there.

Nature

The municipality of Omurtag has a hilly foothill and low-mountain character. The landscape includes mixed forests with oak, hornbeam, beech, and silver-leaved linden trees.

Geographical Setting

Omurtag lies in the eastern Fore-Balkan between the Tuzluka area and the Gerlovo Basin. The municipality of Omurtag belongs to the Stara Planina tourism region, eastern subregion. To the north, first-class road I-4 bypasses the city as its main bypass road and carries a large share of the city's heavy and through traffic.
