Culture

In the centre of Stara Zagora, the “Museum of Religions” architectural complex preserves archaeological layers from a cult pit dating back to the Early Iron Age, a sanctuary of the Thracian Horseman, a medieval Christian cemetery church, and a Muslim temple. The museum was fully conserved and restored in 2011; surviving cult elements are displayed in the complex. The Eski Mosque also belongs to the museum. Its architecture is recognised as a national cultural monument from antiquity and the Middle Ages, while its murals are of national significance.

The Museum of Neolithic Dwellings displays exceptionally well-preserved remains of a two-storey residential building from the beginning of the 6th millennium BC. It also features prehistoric pottery, figurines, jewellery, tools, and human figures made of marble. The Stara Zagora State Opera presents opera, operetta, ballet, children's performances, and concerts. It was Bulgaria's first opera outside the capital. The Museum of Horse and Equestrian Sports exhibits authentic carriages and wagons used by Prince Alexander Battenberg, Prince Ferdinand, and Tsar Boris III.

Activities

Stara Zagora Zoo offers school tours and children's birthday programmes. It houses more than 400 specimens from approximately 80 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians. At the high ropes course in Metropolitan Methodius Kusev Park, also known as Ayazmoto, a mandatory safety briefing and professional supervision are provided. Ahal Horse Base offers riding lessons and horseback rides.

The Yuri Gagarin People's Observatory is described as Bulgaria's first public astronomical observatory. It enables generations to observe the stars and learn about the universe.

Nature

Metropolitan Methodius Kusev Park, also known as Ayazmoto, covers 3,200 decares and is used for walks, relaxation, and leisure. The park includes centuries-old cypresses, an avenue of fountains, and the Chapel of Saint Theodore Tyron.

Local character

The Zagorka World of Beer Museum presents the history of one of Bulgaria's oldest breweries and explains beer production techniques and technologies. The World of Zagorka beer tour ends with a tasting of unfiltered live beer.
