Kaloyan Cave is listed in the protected areas register under code 387. The cave was declared a protected natural landmark on 4 April 1980; its protected area data was updated on 18 June 2007. The designation was made to protect a rock formation.
Specific protection regulations apply to Kaloyan Cave: entering, driving through and parking motor vehicles are prohibited. Plants may neither be picked nor uprooted. Disturbing wildlife, taking young animals or eggs, and damaging nests or burrows are also prohibited. Construction measures are prohibited unless they are provided for in the site's approved planning document.
The protected area of Ozhdren Cave was updated in 2007 from 20,000 to 19,754 decares. Butura Cave is freely accessible and has protected status for a bat colony.
Hiking and Regional Trails
The 15 km-long Lyava Reka–Predela hiking trail runs through the municipality of Gurkovo. The route takes around eight hours and connects to the international Kom–Predela–Emine route. The municipal programme notes that maintenance and signage work is required.
The municipal road SZR 2021 runs from Republic Pass/II-55 through Pchelinovo towards Lyava Reka.

In the municipality of Gurkovo, fishing is possible at Zhrebchevo Reservoir and along the Tundzha, Radova and Lazova rivers.

Pchelinovo is located within the DGS Gurkovo forestry area. This encompasses the southern slopes of part of the Central Balkan Mountains and the northern slopes of the eastern Sredna Gora.
