History

Visible remains of a Roman road run through the Kaleto locality. Kaleto lies between the Danube fortresses of Durostorum and Transmarisca. The locality also contains archaeological finds from the Roman period, including material from the 4th to the 6th century.

Early Slavic settlements in the Popina area were studied at Dzhedzhovi Loza, Drenchoto and Momchila. Excavations at the Drenchoto locality unearthed pottery from the Thracian period.

A Danube Festival is held annually on the banks of the Danube. The Fish Soup Festival serves to preserve the traditions surrounding fish soup and to present the folklore heritage of the Danube region. At the festival, fish soup was prepared according to an original recipe from Popina, using at least ten species of Danube fish. The programme also included a crafts street where artisans and makers of handmade items presented their work.
