The Borovo Thracian Treasure is kept at the Ruse Regional Historical Museum: an ensemble of five silver ritual vessels from the 4th century BC. Ruse combines such archaeological evidence with distinctive buildings, places of remembrance and landscapes along the Danube.

Culture

The Ruse Regional Historical Museum houses more than 130,000 cultural monuments. The permanent exhibition on Sexaginta Prista and Yatrus occupies two halls. The archaeological exhibition also features a late Roman cavalry helmet described as unique in Bulgaria.

The Pantheon of the National Revival Heroes is a national ossuary that opened in 1978 and contains the remains of 39 important figures of the Bulgarian National Revival. The Baba Tonka Museum presents the Obretenov family and Baba Tonka’s role in the Bulgarian National Revival.

The Dohodno Zdanie is an architectural monument in the centre of Ruse. It was built between 1898 and 1902 to a design by the Viennese architect Peter Paul Brank and houses the Sava Ognyanov Drama Theatre. Twelve streets meet at the central Freedom Square; the square is home to the Freedom Monument, fountains and a park, while the Dohodno Zdanie is nearby.

Sexaginta Prista stands on a hill beside the Danube in northwestern Ruse. The site comprises six buildings, an Apollo temple and the Principia headquarters. Around 50 metres of the northwestern fortress wall and a tower have also been preserved.

Nature

Rusenski Lom Nature Park is just a few minutes from Ruse and combines a gorge-like river valley, karst landscapes, biodiversity and cultural heritage. Opportunities there include cycling, caving, hiking, rock climbing and canoeing. Lipnik Forest Park lies 10 km east of Ruse and is described as a nature-oriented recreational destination.

The Ecomuseum with Aquarium explores the coexistence of humans and nature, the diversity of animals along the Danube and the protected areas along the river. It is described as Bulgaria’s largest freshwater aquarium and holds 65 tonnes of water.

Cuisine

Garash cake is described as a cake created in Ruse in the 19th century by the confectioner Kosta Garash. Fish soup is described as a speciality of Ruse and is available at several locations in the city.
