Nisovo: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Nisovo, the Dendro Trail leads to a rocky viewpoint with panoramic views of the Malki Lom River. The route’s thematic trails cover a total of 6 km. The village lies directly next to Rusenski Lom Nature Park, whose river flows through picturesque gorges with cliffs up to 120 metres high; caves and rock formations also shape the landscape.

Trails and Nature

From Nisovo, the Lomovete Nature Reserve Complex is reached via a 1.5 km turn-off from the road to Popovo. A marked trail leads from the complex downhill in five minutes to an unpaved path on the left bank of the Malki Lom. The route then follows the Malki Lom upstream for 300 metres to a small bridge with a railing leading to the opposite bank.

More than 30 local tree and shrub species are marked with name plaques along the Dendro Trail. The trail also features five large information boards with QR codes and information in English.

In the wider regional area surrounding Rusenski Lom Nature Park, the landscape is designated as an Important Bird Area. Falcons, goshawks, Egyptian vultures, red-breasted geese, rock pigeons and other birds can be observed there.

History and Culture

The continuation from the Dendro Trail to the monasteries of Nisovo covers a further 4 km. A rest area is provided at the monasteries of Nisovo.

In nearby Cherven, the inner fortified city had towers and bastions, while the outer city stood at the foot of a rocky ridge. An artificial tunnel for water supply was discovered near Cherven; the fortress’s watchtower is described as the only surviving medieval tower in Bulgaria.

The rock monastery complex can be reached via a steep staircase carved into the rock. The rock complex dates back to the 11th century. Its remains include a church and cells carved out of the rock as extensions of existing caves.
