Built around 1895 and restored, Balinova House is an example of Batak’s traditional architecture and houses an ethnographic exhibition of the Batak Historical Museum. It presents local livelihoods, household interiors, traditional clothing, wood production, agriculture, livestock farming and flax cultivation.
The archaeological heritage of Batak Municipality comprises seven Thracian sanctuaries, 36 necropolises and 21 Late Antique or medieval churches. Hall 1 of the Historical Museum displays original artefacts from antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Bulgarian National Revival, with a focus on the April Uprising of 1876. In Hall 2, a memorial wall commemorates Batak residents who were killed in the wars of the first half of the 20th century. The crypt of the Batak Historical Museum is an underground memorial to Batak residents who were killed during the anti-fascist resistance from 1941 to 1944.
The Boris Sharov Museum Gallery in Sharova House hosts temporary exhibitions from museum collections or guest exhibitions. Sharova House is an architectural and historical cultural monument designated in 1968. The St Nedelya Ossuary Church was built entirely of stone in 1813 and sunk more than one metre into the ground; it is a cultural monument of national importance. At the museum sites, guides and curators offer their services in Bulgarian, Russian and English.
Nature
The Beglika Reserve is located in the territory of the town of Batak. The Golyama Syutka Protected Area covers land in the territory of the town of Batak and protects habitats of brown bears, wolves, otters, capercaillies, woodpeckers and owls. Fotinski Waterfall is a protected natural monument in Fotinovo within Batak Municipality.
In the wider area of Batak Municipality, the Shiroka Polyana and Toshkov Chark reservoirs are presented as destinations for fishing and recreation amid forests and open mountain meadows.
Activities
The Beglika Visitor Trail is 1,590 metres long and has an estimated walking time of 40 minutes. Scientific and educational visits can be conducted along a marked visitor trail in the Beglika Reserve; the trail was designated by the Minister of Environment and Water.
Tsigov Chark is located on the southwestern shore of the Batak Reservoir and offers fishing and water sports. Tsigov Chark also has two fully equipped ski slopes. One of them includes a ski lift, ski storage, plastic sledges and ski instructors.
