Velchevo: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Velchevo is a destination for travelers who would like to rent a holiday apartment. The Velchevo Protected Area encompasses wet meadows on both sides of the Vidima River north, northwest, and east of Velchevo, as well as riparian meadow communities, shrubs, and deciduous forest on nearby foothills and hills.

Nature

The Velchevo Protected Area, with code BG 0002111, is designated in the municipality of Apriltsi for the protection of birds. Part of the municipality of Apriltsi lies within Central Balkan National Park. Nearby, the Vidima forms a picturesque gorge valley between Velchevo and Debnevo.

Activities

The Apriltsi area offers the Vidimsko Praskalo eco-trail. Horse riding and related services are available in the municipality of Apriltsi.

A cycling route leads from Novo Selo through Zla Reka and Vidima to a mineral spring above the Vidima hydroelectric power plant. A mountain biking route runs from Ostrets through Kovachite and Marishnitsa to Vidima.

Culture and Cuisine

The Fruit Growers’ Day in Ostrets includes a ritual pruning of fruit trees, a cultural and musical program, a goods bazaar, and folklore celebrations.

The Lard and Mulled Rakia Festival in Apriltsi presents roasted lard and mulled rakia as typical local specialties.

Getting There

Apriltsi can be reached via the road from Troyan, via the Sofia–Varna route near Sevlievo, or from Sevlievo through the Boaza Pass.
