In Boboshevo, varied landscapes meet a long history: the municipality includes part of the Rila Mountains, the northern slopes of the Ruen Mountains and a section of the tectonic valley of the Struma. There are also protected plant habitats, churches dating from different centuries and finds from a prehistoric settlement. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Boboshevo, you can consider whether you would like to focus your trip more on nature, culture or both.

Mountain landscapes, rivers and protected nature

The municipality’s river system includes the Struma and the Dzherman; the Slatinska flows into the Dzherman. The landscape offers a distinct natural focus, different from visits to historic sites and churches. If you enjoy combining different interests during your stay, you can include river scenery and cultural history in your travel plans without reducing the destination to a single attraction.

Several designated protected areas highlight the local flora and fauna. In the area of the town of Boboshevo, the “Woolly-flowered Astragalus site – Boboshevo” protected area safeguards the population of woolly-flowered astragalus (Astragalus dasyanthus Pall.) and its habitat. In the village of Vukovo, the protected area safeguards the population of anisophyllous mullein (Verbascum anisophyllum Murb.) and its habitat. The Turkish hazel site in Skrino has been designated a natural monument since 25 November 1980. The “Boboshevo” Special Protection Area, code BG0002107, is also part of the Natura 2000 network and was designated on 29 October 2008.

Churches and traces of past centuries

The municipality’s churches differ in age and history. Sveti Todor, near Boboshevo, was built at the beginning of the 11th century. The Church of Sveti Atanas in the town of Boboshevo dates from the 16th to 17th centuries; Sveti Ilija there was built in 1678. The village of Vukovo has two more churches, each with its own historical context: Sveta Petka was built in the second half of the 16th century and painted in 1592. Sveti Nikolay is a 16th-century architectural and artistic monument of national importance and was designated as such in 1969. Together, these dates offer a glimpse into the area’s long history of religious architecture.

Much older history is also part of the municipality’s story. The prehistoric settlement in the Chardako locality near Slatino was inhabited during the Chalcolithic period, in the 5th to 4th millennia BC. Objects made of bone, stone and pottery from Chardako are displayed in the museum collection in Boboshevo. A visit can therefore connect traces of settlement history with the churches built in later centuries. The Loza 1870 cultural centre in Boboshevo was founded in 1870–1871 and is one of the region’s earliest cultural centres.

Monastery, walking path and quiet breaks

The Ruen Monastery of Sveti Yoan Rilski holds three monastery feast days each year: on 1 July, 18 August and 19 October. Above the monastery, in the forest, is a small rock niche vaulted with a stone wall. Local people venerate it as the first hermit’s cave of Saint John of Rila. It can be reached on foot in about ten minutes.

There is a designated picnic area on the grounds beside the Church of Sveti Dimitar, where you can take a break. The area is also known for Boboshevo grapes, cherries and apples. These regional specialities add a culinary perspective to visits to churches and natural sites, without requiring a visit to coincide with a particular festival or harvest season.

This information can help you factor travel into your plans; it does not provide details about timetables or the locations of individual holiday apartments.
