Dobrich combines the landscape of Dobrudzha with green open spaces and a diverse cultural history. The municipality lies on the Dobrudzha Plateau in the Danube hilly region; the valley of the Suha Reka River runs through the city. Experience nature and explore the park
The Dobrich Centre for Nature and Animal Protection is Bulgaria’s first licensed zoo. It covers 162 decares and includes a 40-year-old stand of trees as well as 40-year-old shrub vegetation. The centre also runs the “Green School” educational programme. If you are interested in the biodiversity of Dobrudzha, you can visit a dedicated exhibition: “The Nature of Dobrudzha” presents it mainly through dioramas.
The “St. Georgi” Park offers another way to spend time surrounded by greenery. Separate cycling and walking paths run around a lake with water lilies. The renovated rose garden features 39 varieties of roses. If you are planning an active break, you can also make use of the facilities available: the park includes a skate park and a zip line. This lets you consider nature, cycling and outdoor activities as separate interests when planning your trip, rather than grouping them into a single type of outing.
Culture is also part of the park: its museum hosts temporary exhibitions. Concerts, literary readings and children’s festivals take place in the surrounding area in spring and summer. The programme therefore ranges from museum visits to outdoor events. Literature, crafts and art
Dobrich also preserves the memory of the writer Yordan Yovkov. A memorial house was added to his museum house in 1980. It houses Bulgaria’s only permanent museum exhibition of its kind about Yordan Yovkov, as well as the largest collection of material about the writer. The memorial house also serves as a venue for temporary exhibitions, creative workshops, concerts, theatrical performances, educational games and reenactments.
Old Dobrich turns the focus to traditional Dobrudzha crafts from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The site showcases, preserves and develops these crafts, while also recalling the economic, everyday and architectural history of earlier Dobrich. Together with the Yovkov Memorial House, it offers a cultural perspective that encompasses literary heritage as well as craft and urban history.
The Dobrich Art Gallery displays works by Vladimir Dimitrov–Maystora, Konstantin Shtarkelov, Dechko Uzunov and other artists. It features a rich permanent exhibition and an extensive exhibition calendar. Another way to explore the area’s history is the Dobrich Military Cemetery, Bulgaria’s largest surviving military cemetery from the First World War. Built in 1975, the “Dobrich” Concert Hall is also known to locals as the “Organ Hall”.
