Old Town, Archaeology and Local History
More than 180 houses in the Old Town date from the Bulgarian National Revival period. They were built between the mid-18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Visible historic remains include restored sections of the southern fortress wall and a rectangular tower. Those interested in architectural history will find tangible evidence here from different periods, rather than just a general impression of the city’s past.
The Sozopol Archaeological Museum is listed as a National Tourist Site of Bulgaria under number 8. Across several halls, it displays more than 1,000 exhibits on the history of the city and region, spanning the late 6th millennium BC to the 18th century. Among its notable objects is a marble reliquary that held the relics of John the Baptist. It was discovered in 2010 during excavations at the medieval monastery on St. Ivan Island.
The Church of St. Cyril and Methodius in the Old Town also preserves relics of John the Baptist, discovered on St. Ivan Island in 2010. The art gallery is housed in the Old Schoolhouse in the northern part of the peninsula; the building is listed as a cultural monument. The Ethnographic Museum is located in the Kurdilis House, a local architectural cultural monument. Its subjects range from agriculture and fishing to winemaking and weaving.
Coastal Landscapes and Protected Nature
The natural areas offer a different focus from the historic city. Kolokita Protected Area combines rocky shores and fjords with marine waters and cultivated land. The Alepu Wetland is a lagoon separated from the sea by a strip of beach with dunes. South of Sozopol, in the Kavatsi area, Sand Lily Protected Area preserves one of the largest populations of sand lilies. Kavatsi Sand Dunes Protected Area lies about 3 km south of Sozopol, covers 24 ha and protects characteristic psammophytic vegetation. The dunes reach a height of 5 to 6 m. Near Ravadinovo, Bakarlaka Protected Area preserves the natural habitat of Hager’s tulip (Tulipa hageri Heldr., T. thracica), as well as communities of other protected and rare plant species. The city’s history and its nature reserves therefore offer different thematic focuses to help you decide where to spend your stay.
Art, Culinary Traditions and Experiences
The annual Apollonia Arts Festival features dozens of theatre performances, exhibitions, open-air concerts, literary evenings, film screenings, and chamber and jazz concerts with internationally renowned artists and ensembles. The art gallery also hosts a sculpture plein air and annual international plein airs for marine painters. These arts offerings make Sozopol an interesting choice for travellers who want to combine their holiday with cultural events and visual arts.
At the Fig Festival, local women show guests how to make green fig jam. Sweet and savoury fig specialities, fig brandy, fig wine and tea are offered for tasting. The festival provides an insight into a local culinary tradition. A sea-kayaking programme describes a route in a two-person kayak from Sozopol’s Shell Beach to the islands of St. Ivan and St. Peter; the paddling area is in the vicinity of the city of Sozopol.
