Culture

The Kosharitsa village festival takes place on 1 November in connection with Saint Ivan of Rila. The village also continues the Ivanovden ritual known as the “sons-in-law’s bath”. In this ritual, men who got married the previous year bathe in a local pool. Residents and visitors to Kosharitsa attend the ritual.

Local Character

Kosharitsa is known for producers of traditional Bulgarian sausages, including sudzhuk and lukanka. On 14 January, Kosharitsa hosts a sausage festival featuring tastings of homemade meat specialities.

Nature

The Kosharitsa area is included in Natura 2000 because the Via Pontica migratory bird route passes through it. The protected site of Kalinata is located near Kosharitsa. A longose forest with old ash, oak and elm trees has been preserved there. Kalinata also includes the marsh snowdrop, one of the plant species listed in Bulgaria’s Red Book.

The terrain around Kosharitsa is suitable for mountain biking. The area has several eco-trails for hiking. Small bodies of water around Kosharitsa support recreational fishing.
