Sredets is an old settlement that originated at the end of the fifth century as a military-strategic fortress.

As a road junction, Sredets connects the directions of Elhovo, Yambol, Karnobat and Burgas and serves the settlements in central Strandzha. The town is located about 30 km from Burgas and on a route to the southern Black Sea coast and towards Turkey. Sredets Municipality belongs to the Burgas–Black Sea tourist region, whose centre is Burgas.

Nature

Sredets lies in the foothills of the Strandzha Mountains on the right bank of the Sredetska River. Parts of Sredets Municipality lie in the buffer zone of Strandzha Nature Park; the municipality also includes ancient forests.

Culture

In Fakia, within Sredets Municipality, women preserve the Enyova Bulya ritual. It is re-enacted by the authentic Fakia White Women folklore group.

Local artisans in Sredets Municipality continue to practise pottery, weaving, spinning, cotton processing, basketry and woodworking. Sredets is also home to the Probuda cultural centre, with active amateur arts groups and a library containing more than 48,000 volumes.

The national Strandzha-Thracian gathering “Folklore Wreath Bozhura” takes place over two days in Sredets and in the Bozhura area near the town.

Activities

The visitor information centre in Bozhura is intended as a year-round base for environmental activities, nature-related educational programmes, nature-related exhibitions and events, as well as training in crafts connected with nature and the sustainable use of resources.
