Nature

Culture and History

The Municipal Historical Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1877 in the Bulgarian Baroque style. It has 12 exhibition halls, a lapidarium and a courtyard. The archaeological exhibition includes a Thracian chariot and fragments from the Roman city of Nikopolis ad Nestum dating from the second century.

Annual museum exhibitions display archaeological finds associated with Thracian, Slavic and Proto-Bulgarian cultures that were discovered in the Mesta Valley. Traditional Bulgarian costumes from the Gotse Delchev area are characterised by a wide variety of forms and colours.

The Old Mosque in Gotse Delchev is an architectural and archaeological cultural monument. The Nevrocope Folklore Song and Dance Ensemble is Bulgaria’s first amateur folklore ensemble. During the Bulgarian National Revival, Nevrokop became a centre in the Bulgarian lands for the production of melodic bells and tyumbelekci. The Rifat Bey House is one of the surviving architectural ensembles from the Bulgarian National Revival in the town. In the village of Delchevo, 25 houses are classified as cultural monuments. The churches in Gotse Delchev include the Church of the Holy Archangel Michael.

Nikopolis ad Nestum is one of the few surviving ancient cities in Bulgaria and the only city in the Rhodopes from the period of Roman rule in the Balkans. The remains of Nikopolis ad Nestum lie 7 kilometres east of Gotse Delchev.

Surroundings

A fishpond on the Mesta River offers activities and has a specialised fish restaurant. Uva Nestum is located 1.5 kilometres from Gotse Delchev on the road to Leshten and Kovachevitsa. Uva Nestum is also a winery and boutique restaurant-enoteca located 1.5 kilometres from Gotse Delchev.
