In Vlamertinge, traces of hop processing meet First World War memorial sites and an open parkland setting. The church in the village centre and the cycling route to Elverdinge also give the place its varied character. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would rather focus on discovering its architecture and local history or on the landscape and cycling routes.

Memorial sites and architecture

Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery contains 1,813 Commonwealth graves from the First World War. The cemetery was established in June 1917 and remained in use until October 1918. It extends across two levels; its defining features include a Cross of Sacrifice, a Stone of Remembrance and a classical-style pavilion. Its size and design provide two distinct historical points of reference: the period when it was in use and the form in which the memorial site was laid out.

The listed Hopmagazijn reveals another side of the area's history. The hop warehouse dates from 1869 and is of industrial archaeological value. Its well-preserved fittings include a cast-iron hand press (Ch. Nolet, Gand), a wooden press for pressing hop samples, a wooden hand press in attic floors 1 and 2, four kilns and a cast-iron hoist. The different pieces of equipment illustrate the technical facilities of the hop warehouse. During the First World War, the former Hopmagazijn served as a hospital—a further, clearly distinct period in its history.

Sint-Vedastuskerk is a landmark in the village centre. It is designed in the neo-Gothic style and has an older west tower. After its destruction, reconstruction began in October 1920. Another historical point of reference is Calvarieberg, at the corner of Hospitaalstraat and Poperingestraat: it was ceremonially consecrated on New Year's Day in the Holy Year of 1900. Together, the church and Calvarieberg offer two distinct perspectives on Vlamertinge's architectural and religious heritage.

Parkland and cycling routes

North of the village centre, the park of Kasteel van Vlamertinge stretches along Hospitaalstraat and Kasteelweg towards Elverdinge. Grote Kemmelbeek forms its western boundary. Open lawns and large hay meadows offer views of farms in the immediate area and further afield. This open landscape provides a clear contrast with the area's historic buildings and memorial sites.

The cycling routes add to this picture. A 2.59-kilometre cycle path runs along Vlamertingestraat and forms part of the regional functional cycling network for everyday journeys to school or work. It provides a direct and safe link between Elverdinge and Vlamertinge. In the wider region, the Galgebossen walking route explores Galgebossen, which lies on the border between Elverdinge, Vlamertinge and Poperinge. This means you can consider local history and a broader landscape perspective as distinct focuses when planning your trip.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Vlamertinge, these options may help with your planning: would you like to focus your stay more on cultural heritage and local history, or include parkland and cycling routes? The places and themes mentioned offer specific starting points, without promising that any particular accommodation has specific features.
