Slijpe combines a layered architectural history with a landscape whose past dates back to the early Middle Ages. The Sint-Niklaas parish church, former parish and municipal buildings, and historic farmsteads offer different ways to explore the village’s history. The Spermaliegeul, once one of the most important tidal channels in this salt-marsh plain, is another part of the story. If you choose Slijpe as a holiday destination, you can explore architectural styles, former uses and the development of the landscape.

Sint-Niklaas Church: reconstruction and churchyard

The Sint-Niklaas parish church and cemetery were restored after the First World War. Some older sections of masonry were preserved, while the hall church with its crossing tower was largely rebuilt to match its pre-war appearance. The building thus brings together preserved sections and a reconstruction based on its earlier form. A crossing tower rises above the intersection of the nave and transept and is a characteristic feature of church architecture.

The walled churchyard is home to old pollarded lime trees, chapels and a memorial stone to the First World War. The church also contains a 17th-century marble baptismal font. The memorial stone and baptismal font mark different points in time: one commemorates the First World War, while the other is part of the church’s older furnishings.

Farms and former municipal buildings

“'t Dorpshof” is a historic farmstead dating from the 18th century. It is located near the village centre of Slijpe, west of the church. Nearby, Groot Tempelhof was once the seat of the Slijpe commandery: first of the Templars and, from 1312, of the Hospitallers. Both orders were responsible for the administrative and financial management of the estates in the surrounding area. At Groot Tempelhof, therefore, a former administrative role is also part of the story, alongside the architectural history.

The religious buildings offer further markers in time. The Onderpastorie in Slijpe was a former assistant priest’s house dating from the 19th century. By contrast, the core of the Sint-Niklaas parish rectory in Slijpe dates from the first half of the 18th century. The former municipal hall of Slijpe was designed in 1923 by architect A. Neirynck in the eclectic style. The term “eclectic” describes a design that draws on elements from different styles.

Landscape history and movement

The Spermaliegeul also forms part of the area’s early history. In the early Middle Ages, this tidal channel ran from west to east along the road from Mannekensvere to Gistel and was one of the most important channels in the salt-marsh plain. The Zwarteweg crossed the Spermaliegeul halfway between the village centres of Slijpe and Sint-Pieterskapelle. These geographic reference points give the landscape’s history a clear sense of place: alongside the buildings, former waterways also shape the region’s historic character.
