Discover Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland
Accommodation in Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland
Sankt Margarethen in Burgenland combines distinctive quarry culture with historic sites and trails in the Ruster Hügelland. The town offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: outdoor performances, the history of the Passion Plays, religious buildings, a memorial site, and outdoor activities on foot or by bike. Think about what interests you most on holiday – this can also help guide your search for a holiday apartment.
Quarry culture and Passion Plays
The St. Margarethen quarry is one of Austria’s oldest active building-stone quarries. Since 1996, it has served as the setting for the annual Opera in the Quarry. The opera brings together a spectacular natural backdrop, impressive architecture and outstanding opera performances for an open-air experience amid the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The area around the quarry is part of the Fertő–Neusiedler See UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 2001. Here, an active building-stone quarry and a recurring cultural event come together.
The Passion Plays have their own timeline: in 1926, young people performed them for the first time in a farm’s barn, under the guidance of their parish priest. In the early 1960s, the Roman quarry became the venue for the St. Margarethen Passion Plays. These two details trace the journey from an early performance in a barn to a later venue in the quarry – a different story from that of the opera, which has been performed in the quarry since 1996.
Water ride, memorial and buildings
The Biberburg log flume at Familypark offers a completely different kind of experience. The ride takes guests past beaver scenes in a tree trunk, up an open lift to a height of 17 metres, and then plunges down at 60 km/h into a big splash. The sequence of themed ride, open lift and fast descent gives you a vivid idea of what to expect from the attraction.
The Tor zur Freiheit memorial site comprises a park, a walking trail with informative display panels, the Peace Bell and preserved remains of the Iron Curtain. The trail and panels provide a setting for remembrance, while the bell and surviving border remains add striking symbols. Those interested in history will find a different perspective here than at the stage and the quarry.
The religious buildings also reflect different historical periods. The St. Margarethen charnel house is an early Gothic ossuary dating from the 14th century and connected to a cemetery chapel. The Kogl Chapel was built in 1713, during the plague year, at the highest point of the Kogl and was rededicated as a memorial chapel for returning soldiers in 1971. The construction dates, original purpose and later dedication offer concrete clues to help you place both sites in their historical context.
Trails in the Ruster Hügelland
Sankt Margarethen is located in the Ruster Hügelland. Its extensive, species-rich dry grasslands provide a refuge for numerous animal and plant species that have become rare today. The signposted “Weg über den Berg” circular trail leads to around 50 stone sculptures on Koglberg. Another signposted trail passes a European ground squirrel colony and the exposed face of the sandstone quarry. This gives you a choice of different reasons to go for a walk, from nature to open-air art.
Cycling can also be part of your trip planning: the B10 Neusiedler See Cycle Path can be accessed directly from Sankt Margarethen, and the connecting cycle path starts right by the leisure centre. If cycling is your main focus, this provides a specific point of reference for planning your day. Along with the circular trail and quarry, the town offers several themes for an active stay, without implying any particular walking time or route length.
Find the right holiday apartment
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to explore the history of the opera and Passion Plays, are you interested in the memorial and religious buildings, or would you like to include walking and cycling in your holiday? If the Opera in the Quarry is the deciding factor, check the performance dates for your travel period before booking. This way, your search can focus on the experiences you want to shape your trip.
