El Tarter makes its mark as a sports destination with its snowpark, several high-profile competitions and the Àliga Piste. The snowpark’s line of features is the longest in the Pyrenees and one of the longest in Europe. The piste also offers a distinctive point of reference: in 2013, it received FIS approval as a downhill piste and became one of the best-known pistes in Grandvalira. If you are looking for a holiday rental, these themes can be a starting point for planning your trip. Consider whether the snowpark and piste are your main priorities, or whether you would also like to include nature and culture in the wider destination of Canillo.

Snowpark, competitions and the Àliga Piste

The El Tarter Snowpark is known for the size of its line of features: it is the longest in the Pyrenees and also ranks among the longest in Europe. El Tarter also hosts several high-profile competitions. So, alongside the snowpark, competitions are among the defining themes of the area, without implying that any event is held regularly.

The Àliga Piste adds another sporting point of reference. It received FIS approval as a downhill piste in 2013 and is one of the best-known pistes in Grandvalira. The snowpark and piste therefore offer different starting points for planning your trip: one is known for its line of features, the other is a named piste with approval dating back to a specific year. If these experiences are to shape your stay, you can use them as a starting point when choosing where to stay and selecting your holiday rental.

Nature and outdoor activities in the destination of Canillo

The wider destination of Canillo also offers nature and outdoor activities. Black pines and junipers grow in Coma de Ransol. The herb layer includes heather, abarset and blueberries; bàlec grows in sunny spots. Alpine flowers include gentians, Pyrenean lilies, yarrow and yellow bedstraw. Coma de Ransol is also home to various mammals, including wild boar, roe deer, chamois, stone martens, hares and marmots. There is no guarantee that you will see these animals.

Two ecotourism routes in the parish of Canillo run through the Incles Valley and the Ransol Valley, also known as Coma de Ransol. They are led by qualified professionals. Another specific point of reference is the Camí de l'Obaga in the Incles Valley, which is 2.6 km long one way. The routes and the path offer different points of interest for visitors drawn to the valleys and nature in the destination of Canillo.

The natural landscape also includes the Pont Tibetà de Canillo: it is located in Vall del Riu at an altitude of more than 1,875 metres, is one metre wide and runs up to 158 metres above the ground. These concrete measurements make the bridge a striking feature to consider when planning your trip. Together with the plants, animals and guided routes, it offers a different focus from the snowpark and piste in El Tarter.

If you are travelling with children, the Family Park in the Canillo sector offers summer mini golf for children aged three and up. It also has a free outdoor play area for children aged four to eleven. Mini golf is seasonal; check before your visit whether it is currently open for the summer. This lets you factor in the children’s interests and ages without attributing the Family Park’s activities to El Tarter.

Culture and history in Canillo

One cultural highlight in the wider destination of Canillo is the Romanesque bell tower of Sant Serni de Canillo. It was remodelled in the 17th century, is 27 metres high and rises above Canillo’s old town. The former sanctuary of Meritxell now houses a permanent exhibition on the history of Meritxell and its veneration as Andorra’s patron saint; the sanctuary also organises guided tours.

The Canillo Motorcycle Museum displays 150 motorcycle models from well-known brands across 700 m² and illustrates the evolution of the motorcycle from 1896 to 2013. Espai Galobardes offers a different cultural focus: it is a 300 m² gallery in Canillo’s cable car building. A collection of 524 works by Francesc Galobardes is intended to be stored and displayed there. Exhibitions by other artists and showcases of cultural expressions from Andorra and abroad are also planned. The future tense matters here: these exhibitions are described as part of the gallery’s intended role.

These themes offer different perspectives to help you decide on your trip: in El Tarter, the focus is on the snowpark, competitions and the Àliga Piste; the wider destination of Canillo offers additional nature and culture experiences. Tailor your holiday rental search to the interests you want to shape your plans. This keeps El Tarter as the point of reference for the sporting facts, while the valleys, facilities and sights mentioned are explicitly associated with Canillo.
