Culture and History

At Rozafa Castle, a museum provides information about Shkodër's approximately 2,500-year history and the history of Rozafa Castle. The museum also offers views of Shkodër, Lake Shkodra and the Buna River. The castle itself is considered the most recognisable symbol of Shkodër; from it, views extend across the lake and the surrounding area.

The Historical Museum of Shkodër is housed in Oso Kuka, a distinctive bourgeois residence from the 19th century. It displays archaeological, ethnographic, historical and artistic objects. The Marubi Archive contains hundreds of thousands of negatives documenting people, cities, historical events and social life in Albania.

Gjuhadol is a historic area with cobbled streets and Venetian-style buildings. The main section is designed as a pedestrian area and includes cafés, craft galleries and cultural spaces.

The Inglizi Tower, also called Inglizi Clock, is a historic monument in Shkodër. It served as a public clock and combines English Victorian architecture with local tradition. The Museum of Testimony and Memory documents Albania's totalitarian communist period.

According to its own account, the Venetian Mask Workshop makes masks according to an old Venetian tradition. Visitors can take part in creative sessions and paint their own mask.

Water and Nature

Lake Shkodra lies on the border between Albania and Montenegro and is considered the largest lake in the Balkans. Its ecosystem includes carp, eels and bream. Small islands in the lake provide habitats for various bird species. The Buna River flows from Lake Shkodra to the Adriatic and forms a genuine natural delta.

Lake Shkodra is used for water sports, boating, wildlife observation and fishing. The traditional lakeside villages of Shiroka and Zogaj offer accommodation and dining. Shiroka has a lakeside promenade and restaurants serving fresh fish; Zogaj offers birdwatching and walks in nature.

The Shkodër Promenade connects the city centre with the Museum of History; art and photography shops as well as studios are located along it.
