History and Buildings
Ali Pasha Tepelena Castle was built in the 17th century and served as an important defensive position. It offers panoramic views over Tepelena and the Vjosa.
Lord Byron Square is located in the historic center of Tepelena and commemorates Lord Byron's visit to the city in 1809. The Beçisht Bridge crosses the Vjosa below Tepelena Castle and preserves traces of a Roman construction phase dating from around the middle of the 1st century BC.
The Dragot Bridge is a metal bridge over the Vjosa, was built in the 1930s, and connects Tepelena with southern areas, including Përmet and Gjirokastra. The Ali Pasha Mill is open to visitors and is located about one kilometer from Tepelena's main square. Visitors can still see its traditional, water-powered mechanism in operation there.
