Yaoundé: Monuments, Movement and Nature
Accommodation in Yaoundé
Yaoundé offers distinctive monuments, public spaces for sport and recreation, and botanical discoveries. When planning your trip, you can choose different focuses: architecture and history, movement or nature. If you are looking for a holiday rental, first consider which of these experiences you would like to shape your stay.
Monuments with a distinctive visual language
The Monument de la Réunification was officially inaugurated in 1974 and is 21 metres high. Its cone symbolises the unity towards which all the children of Cameroon are running. The black, white and red mosaic refers to the country’s traditions. The monument was created by the French architect Salomon, the Cameroonian sculptor Gédéon Mpando and the Jesuit priest Engelbert Mveng.
The Monument Patriote has a different design: it consists of two fibreglass arches and a map of Cameroon held up by two hands. Different motifs stand side by side: the Monument de la Réunification’s symbolic form and mosaic, and the map of the country in the hands of the Monument Patriote. If you are interested in architecture and national symbols, these details offer specific points of interest.
Sport, recreation and a market at Parcours Vita
Parcours Vita is a public area for sport and recreation. It is 1.6 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 108 metres. There is also a 200-metre hiking trail with exercise stations. This distinguishes two different route lengths: that of Parcours Vita and that of the shorter hiking trail. There is also an area specifically designed for children.
Sports facilities include a multi-purpose concrete court with stands, a tennis court, a basketball area and a football pitch. The fruit market at Parcours Vita sells fruit and vegetables as well as prepared salads and fruit juices. Sport, recreation and market offerings are different aspects of this public leisure area; as you plan, you can consider which of them appeals to you most.
Canoe trips, animals and botanical gardens
Ecopark Yaoundé offers peaceful canoe trips on the water in a natural setting. Visitors can observe mammals, birds and reptiles at the Ecopark Zoo. The canoe trip and zoo visit offer different experiences: a peaceful journey on the water, and the chance to observe different groups of animals.
Bois Sainte Anastasie has several botanical gardens, including one called “jardin des amours”. If you are interested in botany, you can think of this place alongside the water and wildlife experiences at Ecopark: the destinations appeal to different interests, without requiring you to focus your trip on just one.
Culture in the wider destination of Centre
In the wider destination of Centre, the Musée Ethnographique des peuples de la forêt in Yaoundé has a permanent exhibition. It also organises temporary exhibitions and a festival on the history and culture of forest peoples. These exhibition and event themes complement the monuments of Yaoundé.
The wider destination of Centre also includes the Tunnels ferroviaires de Njock in the Centre region. They consist of three tunnels dug by hand into a rock massif called Liaa. The tunnels are a striking testament to forced labour and the slave system organised in the territory of Cameroon; as cultural heritage, they are listed on UNESCO’s Tentative List. This chapter adds a serious historical note alongside the themes of architecture and nature.
When choosing your holiday rental, you can use these different interests as a guide: would you like your trip to focus mainly on monuments and history, movement and sport, or nature observation?
