Madain Saleh draws attention to Hegra (al-Hijr / Madā’in Ṣāliḥ), an ancient city that bears witness to international caravan trade in late antiquity. Monumental rock-cut tombs, water wells and Nabataean architecture give a visit a clear cultural focus. It is worth taking in not only individual façades, but also the different components of the site.

Hegra and Nabataean Architecture

Hegra is the largest preserved site of Nabataean civilization south of Petra in Jordan. The site has 111 monumental tombs, 94 of them decorated, as well as water wells. Tombs and monuments are carved directly into the sandstone; their decorations are also part of this rock-cut architecture. Hegra is an outstanding example of the architectural achievements and hydraulic expertise of the Nabataeans.

The site includes an oasis, a city, several stone necropolises and a predominantly religious area. This diversity makes Hegra more than a collection of tomb façades: the settlement, oasis and necropolises form distinct parts of the site. Those interested in Nabataean history can shift their attention between the layout of the site and the details carved into the rock.

Tours of Hegra

Hegra can be explored on organised coach tours or in a private premium 4x4 vehicle; self-driving is not permitted. The Hegra Premium Tour lasts two hours and takes visitors by premium 4x4 vehicle with a driver to tombs and gathering places carved into the rock. The Hegra Day Tour includes visits to the Tomb of Lihyan, Son of Kuza, and the Diwan halls.

Tour stops include Jabal Ithlib, Jabal Banat, the Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza, Jabal Ahmar, Jabal Khuraymat and the Handcraft Pavilion. Stops may vary depending on the tour, so check the current itinerary with the provider before your trip. This lets you choose a tour based on the places that interest you most, rather than planning to explore by driving yourself.

Cultural Heritage in the Wider Destination of Saudi Arabia

Across the wider destination of Saudi Arabia, travellers can encounter other cultural heritage sites, each with its own focus. The Ḥimā Cultural Area features rock art depicting hunting, animals, plants and ways of life, set within a cultural continuity spanning 7,000 years. The cultural landscape of the Al-Faw archaeological area includes nearly 12,000 remains dating from prehistory to the later pre-Islamic period. Al-Faw was also an important caravan station on the route from Najran to central and eastern Arabia. These examples broaden the picture of Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage without equating distinct places or their individual histories.
