Pangasinan: Coasts, Islands and Traditions
Accommodation in Pangasinan
Pangasinan offers a variety of ways to shape a trip: long white-sand beaches in the west, soft gray-sand beaches in the central part, islands in clear waters, and places of religious or historical significance. There are also local specialties and festivals that are part of life in individual communities. Which of these aspects interests you most can also guide your search for a suitable base for your trip.
Islands, Water and Coastal Landscapes
Hundred Islands National Park encompasses around 120 picturesque limestone islands rising from crystal-clear blue water. Visitors can go island hopping or kayak through calm waters. The two activities offer different experiences: island hopping focuses on the islands, while kayaking is about being out on the water.
The beaches also offer different landscapes. At Patar Beach in Bolinao, powdery white sand meets stretches of coastline lined with coconut palms. In central Pangasinan, by contrast, the beaches are characterized by soft gray sand. Comparing them can help you decide what to focus on: islands and water activities, or a coastal setting defined by sandy beaches and palms.
Bolinao: Local Specialties and Stories by the Sea
In Bolinao, landscape, food and local tradition go hand in hand. The local specialty Binungey consists of sweet sticky rice slowly cooked in bamboo over charcoal or wood. The cooking method, as well as the ingredients, makes this dish a distinctive discovery of the local cuisine. Bolinao’s fishing industry also inspired the Mangunguna Festival; its name translates as “Fishermen’s Festival.”
The Balingasay River is considered the cleanest river in Region 1, and Bolinao is considered the home of giant clams. At St. James the Great Church, a marker links the place to the claim that the first Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held there. Bolinao therefore brings together different themes: coastal scenery, fishing, local cuisine, and a historical statement presented as a claim.
Lingayen: Museum, Auditorium and Local Products
In Lingayén stands the Banaan Pangasinan Provincial Museum, housed in the historic Casa Real next to the municipal hall. Casa Real once served as the seat of the provincial government. At the museum, visitors can learn about the era of Princess Urduja, the galleon trade, the American colonial period and World War II. Exhibits include artifacts, artworks, art installations and interactive features; the variety of topics and exhibits gives visitors more than one historical focus.
Sison Auditorium hosts some of the most important events in Pangasinan Province. Lingayen Baywalk is one of the capital municipality’s newer attractions. A local product is also part of Lingayen’s identity: bagoong is the municipality’s “One Town One Product” specialty. Lingayen has held the Bagoong Festival since 2011.
Pilgrimage Traditions and Festivals
The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Manaoag in Manaoag is a pilgrimage site. At Our Lady of Manaoag Church, visitors can attend Mass, light candles and pray, as well as explore the Rosary Park, Candle Gallery and museum. The main feast of Our Lady of Manaoag takes place on the third Wednesday of Easter; the general feast day is observed in October, the month of the Rosary. Manaoag also celebrates the Galicayo Festival in honor of Our Lady of Manaoag.
Other places bring together scenery and local events. The Umbrella Rocks of Sabangan in Agno are large, mushroom-shaped rock formations on the coast. The annual Umbrella Rocks Festival celebrates this geological formation. In Dagupan City, the Bangus Festival honors milkfish as a defining emblem of the province; the festival includes street-dancing competitions.
