Siquijor: Discover Caves, Forest and Culture
Accommodation in Siquijor
Between Devotion, Forest and Water
In the wider Siquijor region, quiet devotion, a Holy Week celebration, forests, caves and activities in the marine protected area appeal to different travel interests. This makes it easier to choose the focus of your holiday: you can give more weight to culture, nature or water. When looking for a holiday rental, your preferred type of trip is a useful starting point.
Church and Festival
San Roque Church is a small coral-stone church and a quiet place to pray and meditate. It was built about a century ago in honor of Señor San Roque and served as a refuge for the people of Siquijor in times of illness and hardship. It thus combines a specific building material with a religious and community history.
Mt. Bandilaan is the venue for Pahi-uli, the Siquijor Healing Festival, which is celebrated during Holy Week. These two cultural points of interest offer different experiences: a quiet place for prayer and meditation on the one hand, and a festival closely tied to Holy Week on the other. If you include culture and traditions in your travel plans, you can choose between a place of devotion and a festive occasion.
Forest Reserve, Bird and Cave
Mt. Bandilaan is a 212-hectare forest reserve designated in 1940 by Presidential Proclamation 523. The mountain is also the habitat of the streak-breasted bulbul (Hypsipetes Siquijorensis). The species is considered endangered and is endemic to Siquijor. This brings together a protected forest reserve and a specific bird species endemic to Siquijor as distinct natural features.
Cantabon Cave adds an underground perspective to the nature theme. It is 800 meters long and is considered a destination for cave exploration. Inside, it features crystal terraces and named formations: the King’s Bed, Shower Bell and Angel’s Bath. The cave’s length and formations convey two different features: its extent and specific, individually named highlights.
Water Activities and Getting Your Bearings
Activities at Caticugan Marine Protected Area include kayaking, pedal boating, snorkeling and diving. Boating and exploring by snorkeling or diving offer different experiences: one focuses on getting around on the water, while the other focuses on activities in the water. This distinction can help you decide what kind of activity you want to focus on during your trip.
On Siquijor as a whole, Siquijor Port is an important gateway for tourists; ships and fast boats from Dumaguete City dock here. If you are planning a specific arrival, it is worth checking the current schedule. Mt. Bandilaan’s observation tower offers a different view of Siquijor: it is 15 meters high and provides a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire island. The port and tower thus provide two different points of reference: the port connects Siquijor to Dumaguete City by ship and fast boat, while the tower looks out over the whole island.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Holiday
When looking for a holiday rental, choosing your interests can be a useful first filter. Nature and caves, cultural themes or water activities each offer a different focus.
